Using GameStop PUR $5 certificates on digital currency was a popular slick deal, turning a $15 membership into a $45 profit.

Effective immediately, $5 monthly reward certificates are no longer applicable to digital currency. I just tried to use it in store and was told it no longer works and I have linked a post from someone posting the internal memo.

Hopefully this PSA can save people some gas or rile up some protests from customers to change their policy.

They didn't market it in such a way. Maybe a few rogue stores did, and yes that still falls on corporate, but I've never ever seen them market out in such a way. In fact, it'd be counterintuitive for them to market it in such a way. Why in the world would they want to encourage people to buy something they make relatively nothing on?
To give people like me who would otherwise have no interest in walking into a GameStop to actually show up in the store and possibly buy something. Increased traffic in a store in worth something and they are blowing that with this bait and switch

So, I just stopped by my local Gamestop to use my monthly $5 pro membership reward and the management there says that the $5 off no longer works on the e-shop cards for Nintendo as well as PSN and Xbox. He said they just changed it January 1st. He tried a $10 digital card and a physical card as well as a $20 physical card and the $5 coupon would not apply. They said they've run into the issue multiple times since the 1st and were talking with other employees / management trying to figure out why it wouldn't work.

For many months, I've used my $5 credit on a $10 Nintendo e-shop card so this is a bit disappointing. I suppose I will have to find something else to spend the $5 on..

Just thought I'd give a heads up to others who spend their $5 on the shop credits every month.

One less reason to go into Gamestop. Unless you have a thing for Funkos, cheap merch, or resealed games sold as new.

Ah I see now. I searched "Gamestop pro" in Slickdeals search and nothing came up.

Would the workaround work for the following item?

https://www.gamestop.com/video-ga...37394.html

It costs $5.49 so would only end up 49 cents after purchase but would it also give Microsoft credit rather than the actual "battle packs"?

EDIT-I took the plunge. It does NOT work. If The Crew works stick with that.

Just bought a subscription for full price a couple of weeks ago, so I'm pissed. Outside of getting a few extra bucks on my trade in, the $5 was the only reason I went ahead to join.

This is the oddest repost I have ever seen.

Doesn't work. Stick with The Crew. I don't know what the stipulations are for what codes turn to credit. Maybe it's games only and not add ons?🤷

I went to the store today (Jan 5th) and it worked on buying a $20 Steam card. The one where the code is printed on the end of the receipt. The receipt clearly showed net $15 after $5 discount. The steam card validated without issue for $20. I payed used my GameStop trade-in balance which clearly got reduced by just $15. I did not have any other coupon on my account. I went in - asked if I can use my monthly $5 power up reward to buy a steam card. The sales rep said, "Sure, of course. But it'll have to be a code printing under the receipt". I said that's okay, and then he asked for my phone number to pull up my account. I checked out in just a few seconds without issue. I was in and out of the store in less than a minute. I had gone in expecting it not to work and had thought I'll get a $4.99 game instead. But it did work so I didn't bother with the game.

I'm honestly not sure why it worked for me, but figured I'll post it here. Maybe it's not rolled out everywhere. Worth going in the store to check.

I posted the same comment on Reddit, and someone said that they might have overridden the system to honor it. That's certainly possible. Though the person didn't say anything to that effect. And just literally punched in my phone number and was ready to check out in seconds. Seemed like any regular transaction each month. Maybe he knew what's up and just overrode the system quickly. Not sure.

I didn't allude to knowing anything about the $5 reward not working for people and neither did he mention anything. It didn't seem like he had to do something special, but of course, I wouldn't know. It was all very smooth, quick and courteous. I was pleasantly surprised.
