PSA: Gamestop $5 monthly PUR no longer applies to digital currency effective immediately

I went to the store today (Jan 5th) and it worked on buying a $20 Steam card. The one where the code is printed on the end of the receipt. The receipt clearly showed net $15 after $5 discount. The steam card validated without issue for $20. I payed used my GameStop trade-in balance which clearly got reduced by just $15. I did not have any other coupon on my account. I went in - asked if I can use my monthly $5 power up reward to buy a steam card. The sales rep said, "Sure, of course. But it'll have to be a code printing under the receipt". I said that's okay, and then he asked for my phone number to pull up my account. I checked out in just a few seconds without issue. I was in and out of the store in less than a minute. I had gone in expecting it not to work and had thought I'll get a $4.99 game instead. But it did work so I didn't bother with the game.

I'm honestly not sure why it worked for me, but figured I'll post it here. Maybe it's not rolled out everywhere. Worth going in the store to check.

I posted the same comment on Reddit, and someone said that they might have overridden the system to honor it. That's certainly possible. Though the person didn't say anything to that effect. And just literally punched in my phone number and was ready to check out in seconds. Seemed like any regular transaction each month. Maybe he knew what's up and just overrode the system quickly. Not sure.

I didn't allude to knowing anything about the $5 reward not working for people and neither did he mention anything. It didn't seem like he had to do something special, but of course, I wouldn't know. It was all very smooth, quick and courteous. I was pleasantly surprised.

Look at your receipt. Does it say "Promotion Not Found" under the item? If so, that's a manual override. Most stores won't do that, so you got lucky to find one that did.

Doesn't work. Stick with The Crew. I don't know what the stipulations are for what codes turn to credit. Maybe it's games only and not add ons?🤷

They lost a lot of money by allowing this since the margins on these gift cards is so tiny. The fine print even said that it is not allowed (at least for the points). I had $25 worth of points at the store in Dec and was getting frustrated trying to use it with the rules about denominations of the coupons and no duplication. The employee surprised me by suggesting I just buy a $25 gift card. Went in yesterday to buy a $10 for $5 and no dice. Oh well. I may look for a cheap used game to use it on. It really was nice while it lasted.

Just that, they didn't change their T&C, if you actually read them. They specifically write at least twice that their terms are subject to change without notice, which is kind of BS, but it's in there. You have no legal standing, but as a group of paying customers, maybe they'll listen.

This one worked for me, i had to buy $1 preowned game to pickup in store to checkout, can't checkout with $0.

Like see in description it should say "

Only those will work

The real gem is buying that $7 digital code and paying $2 out of pocket. I let my December credit expire because it wasn't worth jy time to make a trip to the store and stand in line.
