Why do I know all this? I'm insane. Also, I stalked restaurant auctions in the 2010-2015 time frame looking for an undercounter unit to put in my game room. I found one and won the auction for $300, and had to drive a pretty good distance to pick it up. I then stripped, cleaned and reassembled the whole thing, replacing a couple of worn parts for $150-200 or so. It's been running well ever since, though any replacement parts are stupid expensive so I'm always a bit paranoid.
It's also Costco so I'm not too concerned about the warranties. If something crazy does happen you can probably return it years later.
I did purchased it Wed. and it should be here on Tuesday.
We have the updated v1 with the side unit that we bought last year after our first unit finally died after 2 years. Distilled water is a game changer for sure. Less cleaning and way less issues. But I still got the Allstate warranty because I know for a fact this will fail. Just a matter of time
Still works fine 3 years later, gets used a couple times a month and then i just chuck ziploc bags of it in the freezer to keep
I would use RO and softened water so you dont gunk up the mechanicals with calcium
But in terms of quality - there's no comparing the output of this unit to anything a home refrigerator or other counter top unit would produce. It's f'n awesome. My wife made fun of me when I bought it at first in the spring last year, and I warned her - be nice to me, or I won't let you at it. Sure enough, over the summer they were wrestling over who got ice out of it (after me), despite the fridge ice maker already kicking out ice.
Only downsides - it's noisy, it doesn't have a great track record of reliability, and you must must must keep those side vents open. And by open I mean free and clear without anything around it for at least 6 inches. Otherwise, the unit will overheat and bad things will happen, if not immediately then soon.
Cleaning the damn thing isn't exactly fun either, but it's not too bad.

Then I made a batch of guac and put it in one of the containers. The next day it had not turned brown on the top. Impressive, so I left half in rather than eating all of it. Two more days, practically no browning. What?!? I took one chips worth out and left the rest. After FIVE G D DAYS there was a slight discoloration on the top layer - probably due to me opening it the two previous times. It would have been gray goo by day three in the usual storage.
Needless to say, I ordered three more sets (with a coupon and the GC I got for 20% off, this is SD, after all), and threw out nearly all the other plastic storage-ware. And, yes, I let her say, "I told you so" without even flinching.
Anyhow the reviews on this ice maker are not good, and on multiple sites (including GE's own site) of failure and noise early in its life. The other huge negative to me, you cannot install a water line and can only use the side tank to get continuous ice making. I hate tanks of water sitting out in the light...good way to get bacteria over time if you are not constantly using it.

As I write this it is $22 off at $397.
It has both a line to feed water from my RO system, and it also has drain lines when you run the automatic cleaning cycle. Starts making ice in 12 minutes, and it is the "sonic" ice as others have stated. My wife loves the thing, she goes and gets scoops of ice and munches on them through the day.
Finally is it noisy? Each one I read through posted the db noise of the motor, and this one is on the quieter side. Is it silent...no...a compressor is a compressor so they will always make noise, but this doesn't bug us when it is running and we are watching TV.
Hope that helps someone as I read so much on these things I feel I have a good machine.

We always use filtered water and clean with a little bleach each month. No issues to date.
