FYI You can get this for about $100 less if you can verify with Id.me directly from GE. I paid around $450

Seems to be only an added military discount that brings it down that much

I bought the 1.0 version about 3 years ago when it went one sale at Amazon. It had a one year warranty and stopped working about 14 months in. Went through all the youtube repair videos and couldn't fix it. Also when taking it apart all the rubber tubing was calcified. I only used bottled water to fill it, and cleaned with the recommended solution every couple months.

Hesitant to give them another chance, but the ice was great while it worked, but $500 for a years worth of ice was ridiculous.

Does anyone know what the return process is through the all-state/citi warranty? Can I still just take it back to Costco in year 4 or 7 or do I have to go a different route through all-state and another route through Citi, where I have to pay for shipping (these suckers are very heavy)? When I wanted to send my first one back to Opal for repairs out of warranty the shipping alone was $150. The shipping and repairs was basically the same as the purchase price so I said forget it.

EDIT: I just spoke with Costco chat, and was told this was eligible for lifetime returns. Not sure if they were correct. I saved the chat log, can I use that to return to Costco when (not if) it breaks?
Lifetime returns! Almost tempted to buy 2 in case costco stops selling it. I will act as my own warranty/replacement/return shop Smilie

I bought my 2.0 from Best Buy almost two years ago. Only use distilled water and bought the 4 year warranty (that I never buy except for all the issues I say with the 1.0).

Go through about a gallon of water per day mainly for myself. My two year old son loves just eating the ice also.

Great ice machine until it breaks. My first one died after 2 years. Was planning to get another one but didn't want to deal with it breaking again. But with Costco return policy, why not lol.

It's not a standard commercial ice maker, it's a nugget icemaker which extrudes the ice into small, pellet-like semi-frozen chucks. The best name brand is Scotsman, and it has the best nugget ice, but Hoshizaki also makes an alternate version. Scotsman ice is softer (less solidly frozen) and, imho, the gold standard. They start around $2500 for the smallest under-counter, and a countertop version (for institutional/hospital use) starts in the mid to upper $3000 range. Hoshizaki are around the same price, maybe $500-700 more. The Hoshizaki produces a nugget that is closer to a truncated pie (trapezoid) shape and is frozen pretty solid. Full size nugget heads (that you could put in a garage - 36x36x36 head - usually sitting on a storage bin) like you see in Sonic or McDonalds are going to start in the $4000-5000 range.

Why do I know all this? I'm insane. Also, I stalked restaurant auctions in the 2010-2015 time frame looking for an undercounter unit to put in my game room. I found one and won the auction for $300, and had to drive a pretty good distance to pick it up. I then stripped, cleaned and reassembled the whole thing, replacing a couple of worn parts for $150-200 or so. It's been running well ever since, though any replacement parts are stupid expensive so I'm always a bit paranoid.

I'm just amused by the string of responses here. People actually pay over half a grand for… ice.

Have you ever had Sonic ice? It's magical.

I have this particular machine, I use it every few days, works great really like it a lot and the ice it produces is excellent, but the "First Batch Ready in 20 Minutes or Less" seems a bit of a stretch, it takes more like 3-4 hours for that first batch to finish, at least with my unit. Ice is just barely starting to drop into the reservoir in 20 minutes, is this the norm or do I have a faulty unit?

You don't get it. The people who eat ice and use it to make iced coffee (cause they hate hot coffee) understand.

Sipping a half glass of water and crunching ice write now as I type.

I have one. Makes great ice but it is very finicky where sometimes the pump won't prime and it just keeps asking for more water even with a full reservoir. Even with a monthly deep cleaning with vinegar soak.

On a second one now after the first needed warranty replacement after fewer than 8 months. It has same finicky issues, but so far I've been able to get it to prime after a while.

Definitely recommend if you can get it with a long term warranty.

Crazy. I chatted with Costco as well and they told me it was a major appliance and falls under the 90 day return policy. I wish we could get the definitive answer before pulling the trigger.

Well, I guess in theory. But even as a single guy with executive membership for over over two decades, I'm still kind of too shy for that on year two, let alone seven

Snap out of it. So many people say this dies in 1-2 years. Not a good thing to shove $500 at.

Warranty will only get you another one that is likely to die in 1-2 years. After spend half your life trying to get someone on the phone who will do the warranty, the warranty ends, then the one you have dies within a year or two.

Horrible dynamics here.

If everyone was saying this thing lasted forever, I'd buy it.
