A higher quality amp would be rated to drive 4 ohm speakers. But that's usually only available with 2-channel stereo amps/receivers (my preference). But generally Onkyo makes good stuff.
you do know the lower the ohm, the larger the wattage number can be obtained from the same power source.

a 10V 10A source can push 1w to a 100 ohm load, 10w to a 10 ohm load, 100w to a 1 ohm load.

I'm not feeling good about hdmi 2.1. It almost feel like it will be mainstream by the end of the year when 2.2 will be announced.

I'm keeping my Yamaha RX2010 (9.2) as my sound processor works for me (YPAO). I do have front presence speakers and 4 surrounds, with 2 subs, not sure what Atmos would add, as my family room isn't perfect. Probably not much, but not sure I'd want to spend 2k on another AV.

I just added a 8k Switch with an Audio extractor.

Pretty jaded already after upgrading in wall HDMI cables (prolly an HDCP issue), lubbing cables and pulling and cutting drywall at times or else Xbox X wouldn't work right with the extractor. Now it does.

I don't actually care about 8k at all, but it seems like videogames and new streamers will push the HDCP side of things, IDK

I will consider completely separating audio from video, with preamps and power amps if this craziness continues into HDMI 3.3b and HDCP 4.0 etc.

Atmos, when done properly (minimum of 4 Atmos Channels all in ceiling speaker config) sounds absolutely amazing. It changes the way you listen to the audio of any movie and fully immerses you inside of the action.

Even though Yamaha has recorded DSP fields from some of the world's most iconic venues...

You don't know what you're missing.

I picked this up and am encountering an annoying bug that I can't work around. I have a 7.1 setup (was hoping to move to 7.1.2), and when playing 5.1 content, the rear surrounds play the surround channels. The actual surrounds output no volume. I disconnected everything and plugged back in my older receiver and 5.1 content plays correctly. I can't figure out what's wrong.
Have you told the system that's what you're doing? You might have to configure it in the setup.

It's my opinion that you probably want a HDMI 2.1 receiver in 2022 even if there is not a whole lot of content at 4K 120hz right now. In a few years as more and more lower to mid tier TVs switch to HDMI 2.1 and console refreshes/GPUs becoming more powerful, you're going to be happy that you bought a receiver with HDMI 2.1.

If you're only going to use your receiver to watch movies and listen to music then I agree, no big reason to upgrade. But for multimedia consumers I don't think paying 800 for this receiver is worth it.
They always have issues, because new TV's, PCs, will have HDMI 2.2, or 2.1b, and there will be compatibility issues, until they settle for High Bandwith Display Port like regular PC's

This reciever has no preouts for using more powerful amps so it's no go for me.

What does the receivers test tones do? Does the surround channel from the test tones come out the rear? Some of these receivers let you substitute amplifier channels maybe that's the case? I do not know about this specific model

You need to run the speaker setup again. Either manually set which speakers you have or run audyssey.

Onkyo stopped using Audyssey many years ago. They use their own calibration system called AccuEQ.

Either way he probably needs to run it again and make sure the speaker channels are assigned properly.

No eARC is a deal breaker (only has ARC). I can live with no HDMI 2.1 since I only have 2 devices connected to my TV with 4 HDMI 2.1 inputs, but eARC is a must for me.

Yes. Don't you need eARC to get atmos from the tv too? How can it not have eARC?
