Sony has a better sound and noise-cancelling IMO, but the QC's are the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn.
Several considerations:
1. Bose customer service is not what it used to be. Very difficult to get get a response - it's mostly scripted by offshore analysts.
2. Bose website will accept id.me for students, medical, first responders, etc.
3. AmEx cardholder offer if valid through 01-May ($50 max). Reminder: you must apply the discount to your AmEx account for it to be acknowledged.
15% off up to $50 off total

Edit- was actually able to get it lower

$249 base
- $30 id.me
- $33 Amex
- $11 Bing 5%
= $175

You can't go wrong with either. The sound quality is very similar. Noise canceling, I would give the nod to Sony. The touch functions on the Sony, make it feel more premium than the buttons on the Bose. I use the Bose more often, however, as it is more forgiving on my head.

Is this basically just a qc45 with a soft care instead of a hard case?

A great deal for this price. also easy to replace the ear pads if they wear out. Replaced mine a couple of times and the unit is still great esp. in long haul flights.

One of the best sounding headphones out there. I had QC45, I didn't like the sound profile, returned the QC45 for this one and have no regrets.

How's the mic on this? Can I get similar results with a high end gaming headset?

I'd say no:

Even if you're considering a super cheap $45 gaming headset like a G432, something dedicated to a purpose is generally always going to be better.

I'd say it's easier to make a gaming headset work for office/calls work than vice-versa, but what you'd buy the Bose for is escaping from your environment.
