I recently watched a side by side review of the Atomic vs XR. They are essentially IDENTICAL in looks and performance (neither has more plastic, or is any smaller/bigger than the other). The XR really only has 2 things that were different:

1- belt clip (the Atomic didn't even have holes in the handle to mount one)
2- 3-speed selector

I especially wanted the 3-speeds feature. However, if the Atomic came with a 2Ah battery (which I didn't realize, tbh), that is well worth considering. I bought the XR kit, but I HATE the crappy 1.5AH battery. It doesn't snap in snugly to a tool--it literally jiggles! I would almost rather have the Atomic with an REAL Dewalt battery, even if only 2Ah...

Otoh, I bought the kit for the tool--I considered everything else almost disposable (low end battery and charger, another bag, yadda yadda). So I guess I'm good.

They've had so many DeWalt deals lately that this would be a great addition to a couple of tools that you may already have. Extra battery and charger and the tool at 'bare tool' price 👍

What is this tool used for? This is the one tool that I see advertised where I don't actually know what it does.

It vibrates a blade that saws and cuts wood, Plasterboard etc in tight places. Great for installing flooring for the trim under doors and cutting out holes in plasterboard for old work boxes.

I had a couple in various lowes stores for in store pick up, snagged one this way. Make sure you click the location under where it says "Free Store Pickup" and adjust the quantity and add to cart that way. If you don't, it will show a truck delivery option you don't want at check out

I have this Oscillator. It's great but with the 2AH battery it really struggles to cut through things that my old corded Rockwell oscillator can slice like butter.

Any opinions on the XR vs the atomic? Home depot has the atomic for the same price. The differences I can find are the XR is 20k opm (vs 18k), has a 3 speed selector (vs not pushing the trigger in the whole way) and a bag. But the atomic has a 2AH battery vs 1.5AH with the XR.

This type of tool excels at cutting things flush to a surface, especially in tight spaces. A recent example was when a contractor used one to cut the rusted bolt attaching my toilet to the floor during a remodel. You have to cut the bolt as low on the base as possible and no other power tool that I can think of would have worked.

Another common use is to cut door trim to fit new flooring without removing the trim.
