I'm still trying to figure out why the older r4 model would be better than this newer one. This one has the newer processor and has the ability to add ram. What am I missing?

Because they introduced X15 and X17 in 2021 which is supposed to be their best performing and costlier platform. That's the reason, the successor of R4, m15 R5 and R6, got reduced performance, mainly due to lower wattage GPU and slightly inferior cooling. The main reason was to promote the X series.
