Was at my local Home Depot today and saw this Honda lawnmower on clearance. Decided to post it here because I almost never see Honda lawnmowers on sale or clearance. Regular price is $700 and it was in clearance for $524. They had a few here at home depot largo, FL.

Bought it last year, mowed a few times, drive mechanism is terrible. Sold it, bought toro super recycler. Very happy.

My B&S engines always outlast the mower (and start on first pull). Last was 15 years old and the deck finally rusted in half. Engine still ran good, so I sold it. And I rarely do the regular maintenance that I should. I do have a Husqvarna mower with a Honda engine that always takes about 3 pulls.
Honda's OHV small engines used to be the bee's knees. However, they've lost most of their cachet because of all the cheap but good Chonda engines on the market now. Honda became a victim of its own success when its patents expired, allowing Chinese manufacturers to copy its excellent design. Some people still want a Honda, though.

...both my post and yours are equally relevant to this thread.
I wouldn't say equally relevant. I would argue that TodayOnly's comment had greater relevance because it concerned buying a lawn mower.

34 yr old Toro self propelled with Tecumseh engine still my daily mower. It even spent 3 years mowing commercially and I don't mean as a supplemental edger. No engine parts ever replaced. My brother's Honda GVC160 engine broken valve rocker arm, bent crankshaft, and 2 carburetors. I will say one thing Honda definitely makes the quietest engines.

^ This. Hyperinflation in full effect. I thought about buying a Honda mower when it was $299. But instead I picked up a used Craftsman mower from my neighbors curb. He couldn't get it started and bought a new one. I cleaned out the carb, installed new $5 filter and it's been running for 4 years now. Applause

It probably didn't have a Honda engine. Folks gladly pay double for a mower so equipped. Never mind that Briggs & Stratton engines are just as reliable, at least with a little maintenance. I've had B&S powered mowers start first pull for over 10 years. It's a brand allegiance thing.
To say that B&S engines are just as reliable as Honda is a joke. There is a reason that professionals almost exclusively use Honda engines. It is because B&S has been putting out crap that doesn't hold up for decades. They may be fine for occasional use, but a Honda will run for years with minimal maintenance and no down time. I've been using Honda engines in my business for over 40 years and I am still amazed at how reliable they are. Maybe you are right that there is some brand loyalty involved, but it was earned, and B&S engines were tried and failed.

Best mower hands down and great price! I had this before my zero turn and it was a dream of a work horse! Highly recommended if you like quality and a one pull start every time.

While everyone going gaga over a Honda lawnmower, I have a 13 year old self propelled MTD mower with B&S engine that is working flawlessly over so many years. All I do is yearly air filter and engine oil change. You don't need have to spend a lot of money for a decent reliable mower.
Not everyone is going gaga for a Honda mower. I'm not willing to pay double for that brand mystique, when B&S engines are so bulletproof and dependable. Your last sentence is spot on!

I have a 21 year old B&S based 6.75 HP Craftsman. It fires up on the 3rd pull every time including right after winter. I have never changed oil on it. Changed the plug ONCE. I do add oil and it does leak a bit on the deck but the engine just won't quit.

I did buy the HRR216 the other year late 2019 on clearance but haven't opened it. I keep using the working one I have. I even tried to give it away for FREE this year and no takers. I will open the Honda this coming spring but I have been very happy with that Craftsman. The deck is rusting but not that bad. If I wash it and clean up the oil leak it still looks brand new.
