I have almost every model, and the Spot is the best night stand model, followed by the Show 5. I also like the 3.5mm audio output on the 1st gen Show 5. The newest model doesn't have this anymore, so you can't hook up external speakers unfortunately.

Want to know the same, but I'm really just looking for a cheap wifi photo frame. I already have a Prime account for photos.

I have three of these, i love them. Better sound than the larger screen models. All of them still going strong after 3 years. That said, i dont really look at the screen all that much.

Thank you!! I love my 2019 Echo Show 5 and wanted another one for my nightstand on the cheap since my stupid defective Spot device is on its deathbed. Repped!

Really, really badly.

Gen 1s are a mixed bag of QC. I managed to get a free refurb one to replace my original because of screen tearing.

Even the "new" one's screen gets... funny. Flashes, gets superimposed on itself... not a well made devide. Show gen 2 is night and day better.

Anyway, it sucks really badly. First of all, if you're new to the show ecosystem, forget it. Its a bad ecosystem. If you like more screens to view unsolicited ads on, this is the product for you.

Otherwise, dots are superior. Dots only give you ads when you ask innocent questions (BY THE WAY I CAN ORDER YOU A NEW MARITAL AID ANYTIME when you ask to turn the lights up).

Realistically, the use cases for the screen are abysmal. Unless you need a visual timer for your kitchen, stick to the audio-only devices with no cameras.

My spidey senses tell me to keep away. When they get old they are slow and a pain in the ass. Odds are it will be barely acceptable when you get it and give you a torturous journey as it gets slower and less responsive.

Or it will be mostly fine and no big deal.

Torture to think about.

One strategy to use, if you get it and it's not too slow to return.. don't get any updates and keep it that way. at the end of the product cycle, the last few updates pretty much always change devices to usable to unusable.

That's great. I'm pretty sure you shouldn't get any more updates and it will stay that way. Is at end of cycle. I think amazon isn't as bad as apple and droid. At this point every update is a crapshot. I've had several devices that lasted silly long becdause I didn't get updates.

Photo frames don't take much to work. You don't have to touch the screen for that so you don't have to worry if it has 'slow responce to touch' problems. Probably good. It's watching video and teleconfrencing that are probably 'fat chance'.

I almost got another, solved one of my biggest problems, keeping those Amazon active bookshelf speakers from going into sleep mode. Prime music is just a command away and BT reconnects should I switch inputs from TV on book shelfs. This is the 1st gen with big 7" screen.

The first gen contains an Intel atom x5-Z8350vs all other echo shows use the mediatek 8163, except the new echo 15. Spec wise the original echo should be more powerful, but their could be software differences allowing the mediatek to outperform. Funny enough the atom is one year newer and runs memory at twice the speed. Take this with grain of salt though, specs aren't always everything.

My personal experience is they all suck, buy a fire tablet and a speaker. Amazon has locked down all the shows in such a mind bogglingly stupid way. Want to watch plex? Tough luck, want to use the browser to visit a website you like, tough luck.

That being said if you understand what it can and can't do this is a good price, it will go end of life soon, whatever that means as it will still do everything it currently can just won't get any new tricks.
