Reading a reviewer on Samsung.com who bought one, they said they fixed the brightness issue by turning off Eco mode, bumping up the brightness to 85 and turning Game mode ON. Said it was brighter after those adjustments than his current highly rated monitor.
So, there is hope.

I'm reading the screen is dim. Anyone with a solution or a. Alternative for this price range?
I've been looking at USB-C monitors for use with a laptop that have PD charging, and this looks great with 90W charging power, but that dim screen! Ugh...
I've researched other brands and nothing in this price range with all these features.

Sort of apples and oranges. You're missing one of the main features of this Samsung -- USB-C. It allows one to connect to a laptop with one cable that will not only serve as the display cable, but will charge the laptop through the monitor (up to 90W with this Samsung), AND, the monitor provides a USB-A hub for users of laptops that have no USB-A ports. A very clean setup with lots of functionality.
Plus, it's 4K which is needed to keep the display resolution similar to a MacBook Pro.
The Lenovo, while a good deal for a 27" QHD monitor, has none of the features I listed above.

Apparently the eco setting makes the monitor very dim and the option to turn it off is buried in the settings, so many people didn't find that. Afterwards it's apparently around 300 nits.
Has anyone had a positive experience with using this or another USB-C monitor to power their Macbook and use other USB-A peripherals? I've had mixed success with USB hubs and trying to power a new Macbook Air via non-Apple products.
What's the difference between this S80UA and the S80A I got from Amazon yesterday?
From what I can tell, there are two versions of the USB-C model floating around. One has speakers and the other doesn't. Apparently, Amazon sells the speaker model.

Might just try one and see how bad it is...
EDIT: this is one that I was seriously considering, but is much more expensive:
