LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black (WH14NS40)

Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007VPGL5U?

Newegg:
https://www.newegg.com/lg-wh14ns4...6827136250

Downgrade firmware to v1.02 to make full use of it.
Here YouTube video.

Check to see it works as QC is suspect. As long as it does best bang. Long time since 2018 on SD.

External enclosure (not sure if u need to buy one with adapter but in past got everything for $50 so msrp went up):

(Actually for $96 includes everything including wh14ns40 so that's not bad).

From Amazon review: "This is a barebone drive. You're getting it cheaper because there is no software disk, manual and often not even a box. Physical stores sell these in a plastic bag, not even cardboard box. Don't worry though, my Windows 10 PC detected and installed it without any issues (didn't even have to download anything). You can then go to the LG site and download the software that would have came with it and download it. The software might have some nice features."

Videohelp.com
Software section for lots of freeware.
You don't need to pay to write, read, rip, play commercial blurays, etc.

Makemkv, dvdfab, leawo - bluray player and ripper. See makemkv forums to start.

Vlc plays unencrypted video files and discs (non commercial). If you add decoders, it can play encrypted/protected commercial movie discs straight without ripping (e.g. https://www.videolan.org/develope...vdcss.html). But since leawo etc give you a free player that plays everything.... Only for the geeks..

Do you want a mid or full tower or desktop-style case? I have several of each but depends on the use for me. Since my gaming machine needs fans for cooling and GOOD video cards, I use full towers, though some mid will work with the right measurements. You can get good fans or liquid cooling but I have found several quiet fans and coolers that work awesome and are not loud. You could also get a 5.25" external USB case and use that with any. Give us some more info please on what you like, then I will post some ideas, but always use (like in any decision) what works for you and you like, not what others tell you to like.

I don't know about everyone else, but I go mkv highest 1080p very slow, same as source constant framerate, and the adjust 20-23 depending on movie type. I keep closer to placebo for action.

Grabbed one last week sold by Amazon.com. I successfully flashed it to the 1.02MK firmware using this USB adadpter:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

and was able to rip a UHD title with MakeMKV.
Keep in mind that if you have a 12th gen Intel, you won't be able to use this to play standard or 4K Blu-ray movies on your PC because Intel removed some required HDCP security thing from their newest chips (citing that the HDCP handshake protocol is a security vulnerability).

What do you mean by "function"?

The main reason for users of this drive is to update to 4K-rip friendly firmware. Then rip their 4K UHD discs to play using Plex Server or Kodi.

What do these usually go for? Doesn't show a discount listed on the Amazon page. Where's the "deal" here?

The post just says "without software" so I'm a bit confused at what software is needed

I have one of these and it was great while it lasted. Unfortunately, it died after only a year or two. It happened right in the middle of reading a Blu-Ray. It will still read DVDs but not Blu-Rays. I replaced it with the 16x version. Hopefully that one holds up better.
