how long

how long does this last before one needs the replacement blades?
As good a price as this is, I wish it wasn't an annual cost
Depends on how course your hair is. I'd consider myself average. I typically replace the foil and blade combo every 18 months.

I only need to shave my neck every few days, so a small shaver head is easier to work around my beard line. This head looks very bulky. Anyone have any experience with this one and a beard?
I prefer the Arc3 size over the Arc4 because the head is rather bulky if you're trying to trim the neck and not catch the beard by accident. The Arc4 is a slight improvement over the Arc3 in terms of motor and speed of shaving due to the larger head, but if you're only shaving a small area, the Arc3 is probably what you want.

That said, I'm still using the Arc4 with a short beard and I like it more than the Arc3 because it does shave quicker. So it's a really a matter of preference. At this price, it's cheaper than the Arc3, but I think the low price for the Arc3 is around $40. So if you're not in a rush, you can wait for the Arc3, otherwise the Arc4 at this price is still a good deal.

I've had mine for years and never replaced; it does pull my hairs every so often but I'm cheap. Although I think it's time for a complete replacement.

I really don't know the difference. So this is meant for someone who uses it daily?
Without the blade guard the wahls does give a close enough cut akin to shaving
Particularly someone looking for a close shave daily. I suspect if you have fair hair and skin that isn't too sensitive the Wahl would do the job. By contrast, I used a Wahl daily when I was doing a sort of stubble/5 o'clock shadow beard look daily.

My favorite razor remains an OLD three-blade version from Panasonic whose battery holds about a single shave these days. I could probably switch the blades, but perhaps it is time to let go (and not have too much fun trying to tear it down and replace the battery myself). Anyone have any notes on going from the three blade model to this larger four blade model? I have a small face so I'm worried this thing is going to be unwieldy and less usable for me.

Good luck!

When the inner foil designed to catch longer hairs would start tugging that was always a good indicator of the time to swap the blades. Fortunately for me that cycle was usually about two years.

Good luck!

Had the arc4 and now the arc5.

arc5 is bulkier (and kinda looks excessive/intimidating to be honest), but IMHO it's a much better shaver overall in terms of how few passes it needs for a shave. If you have sensitive skin, IMHO arc5 line is better.

Downside is slightly more expensive, and might not be ideal for shaving small surfaces (like people with beards shaving just parts of their face). Then I'd look at the arc3 which is better for smaller more precise shaves.

But for people shaving their whole face, I'd honestly say the arc5 is the better product. You get over the size very quickly. Less irritation, quicker shaves.

Yeah, my 11 year old Arc3 is due for replacement soon, I'll probably just wait for a deal on that. Thanks for the info, repped.

This was particularly helpful for me. I think the takeaway for me is that, yes the Arc4 is less agile than the Arc3 but, if I'm not keeping a beard (so just looking for a clean shave) I might actually enjoy a faster shave(?).

Good luck!

I was just going to say the replacement foil/blades set is 57 bucks.... Better to just get a whole new razor.

You can get the inner blade without the foil for $20.
The foil won't wear out for a long time unless you drop it and break it or something.

Yep, I upgraded from arc 3 to arc 5. Now the arc 3 stays in the shower so I can shave.. Other parts that's not my face lol

Man I'm surprised the battery isn't dead yet! I loved my first Arc3, but the battery failed at around 6-7 years. If you're looking for a replacement, definitely worth replacing it.

If those that are interested....replacing the battery cost more than the shaver is worth, especially if you have to replace the blades. Batteries tend to range from $15-20 and you have to disassemble the entire unit. They started to solder the battery in later models, but I think the early ones can still be replaced from what research I did with my old shavers.

Eventually I gave into consumerism and bought a replacement despite trying to be ecological and not make more waste...it didn't make sense to fix something when it was cheaper to buy a whole new device Frown

how else are you going to shave a straight razor? At one time I used Mach 3's and those were way more expensive than a set of foils every year aprox.

I will say I like the arc III better than the arc IV its just a tad bulky but that is a personal preference. At this price I'd jump on the ARC IV. If I didnt have a 2.5 year old ARC III that is working great with fresh foil/blades from november.
