This movie is worth watching even if you don't know anything about Dune. I've heard many people who went in blind coming out absolutely blown away.
If you are a die hard book fan, 90% of the time you'll also come out blown away. It's generally the people who wanted everything from the book in the movie that get a little disappointed. Some cuts were made (e.g. there is no banquet scene or talk of imperial conditioning) but it's just so damn good. In my mind, it's exactly what I imagined when reading.
The movie covers the first half of the book Dune. The director wants to make the sequel book (Dune Messiah) into a third movie that he'll probably call Dune Part 3, but this movie is not 1/3 of the first book, it's 1/2.
It was and it wasn't, definitely better than past attempts at a movie but still far from what the mind gets from the book. Hopefully an extended version will make me enjoy it more if that ever happens. Dramatically changing some of the most important scenes left me feeling negatively, had I not read and re-read the original I probably would have enjoyed the movie more.
The book Dune is 3 books in one. So this movie is Part 1 / Book 1, or Dune 0.333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333 isn't it?
