Fluid is better, but they're not $18.

These are also useful as repair stands.
Great advice backed up by excellent article 🙂

Spending $300+ on a fluid trainer seems more like a professional indoor riding solution than an entry level one. Although they may be better someone on a budget may not be able to get into riding shelling that much out just to try a fluid trainer

True. I happened upon my Elite fluid trainer at a bike store clearance sale for $125, so I lucked out.

I also have upgraded to direct drive smart trainer, but didn't suggest that 😉

The Kinetic fluid trainer is often sub $50 on craigslist. It's been made for a really long time and sometimes people just want to get rid of their unused stuff. Nashbar and Performance also made fluid trainers.

Fluids not just better, for me it's the difference between unusable and amazing.

It gets the wheel off the ground for wheel work, chain, brake, and derailleur adjustments (though r. der. limit screws might be hard to get at). Albeit not at an ideal height unless you have an appropriately sized table to put it all on.

One of the really exciting things in bike training is when you train with a power meter. The absolute cheapest way to do this indoors is a used Kinetic Road Machine and the Bluetooth addon that's $40*. This is extremely accurate as tested in multiple places.

Golden Cheetah is open source and you can track and download programs and workouts for free (even with video rides). The Kinetic app also comes with free workouts and programs and you can sub for more or add your own workouts.

But also, this setup works with Zwift, Trainer Road, Rouvy etc.

*I have the older $30 bluetooth only one, it still works with everything, but for $10 more get the newest one, it supports ANT+™, ANT+™ FE-C, and Bluetooth® FTMS

Like someone else mentioned, this will make a great stand. Especially for bike fittings.
