I don't even need to stay with Canon since I don't have any accessories I need to be able to take to a new camera.

This may be the lowest price ever for the EOS R. The sensor is a little old. But for most people, this will still be a very capable camera at a good price.
This camera is currently $1600-ish everywhere else. So this may be an Amazon flash deal. Not sure how long it'll last.

T8i added 4K video but some of the other features was cutting back. Both T7i and T8i are very good depends if you need 4K and if you can get them cheap (many used are in the 4-500 range). Don't do anything lower than T7i, that is when the Dual Pixel focus was added and it is much better for AF performance.
If you have budget around $500-800 and still on SLR
Canon 6D2 is the FF equivalent of T7/8i and you can use all the existing EF lens
If you have budget around $900-2000 for Mirrorless
for Canon mirrorless, you get better AI/eye/face/people AF, if you can get RP/R that is fantastic except you will need lens with image stabilization if you shoot more than 70mm.
for Sony, A7C is between A73 and A74 and good price with IBIS (in-body stabilization) so you can use most lens including those without build-in image stabilization if you are into telephoto.
for Nikon, they are still trying to catch up on low end, but if you can get one of the Z5/6 cheap on the lower price range, that works fine.

If you are into Sony, at least get A7C or A73.

That said, Amazon has a 30 day return period. So you could buy the R now, keep it boxed up until later this month to see if Canon makes an announcement. If yes, then you could decide to keep or return. If they don't you have the R at this great price.
