No, you didn't buy this computer in 2017, given the processor was released Q3, 2020.
4GB and Win11?

Yeah...4 GB was rolling the dice even back on Windows 7. Not sure if I'd trust this system even for random internet browsing. Less RAM than a similarly priced phone.

Processor has similar passmark scores to 8th and 10th gen i5-i7 U series laptops.

RAM is low... though from my experience with some Windows VM with 4GB dedicated... it's serviceable for basic browsing with a half dozen tabs and typing Word docs. I'm running a Windows VM on a 4200U with 4GB RAM that has a Passmark that's around 35% of this processor. With MS Teams, 5 tabs and Word, it's a little choppy but manages at 85% RAM usage. I'm sure with a faster processor, it would be a little more smooth. Nvme certainly would help here too.

Certainly better performing overall than most of those cheap Chromebooks with Celeron processors.

I bought this exact computer in 2017 and it worked all of 3 months at the expected speed which was good.after 3 months tho it is slower than when we first had dial up internet. Takes 5 min to boot, if you click a program takes forever to load, i had it sent back to dell for repair but no change. I've tried everything to fix but now its an expensive paper weight

For real I remember back in the Vista days, my old C2D Toshiba A305 coming with 4GB DDR2. 2008. Windows 10 and 11 run like garbage with 4GB. Wouldn't really want anything with less than 8GB minimum.

Sounds like you filled up with malware and software corruption than the computer itself going bad…

Is max ram 16 or 12 on this?
If you remove the 4gb stick, you can get to 32gb (2x16gb) although the processor supports 64 gb but not sure if the motherboard supports it

I had anti-virus and only used for school. I'm pretty good at keeping it clean

I have a similar version with i3 9th gen 4gb and 128gb. Works like a charm even after upgrade to win 11. Thinking of buying for mother in law.

Anyone know where to get an extra memory stick? Will it be better to buy a 4gb stick to match the existing 4gb?

If you just want an additional 4GB, then you can get a 4GB DDR4 SODIMM 2666 for like $13. Worth the extra $1 to get 2666MHz.

IIRC, if you mismatch RAM size, then the first 4GB addressed will run in dual channel mode, then the remaining will run in single channel.

Make use of Amex 120 CB offer for Dell and get the below laptop for $500. Looks like a better deal to me.

And if you spend $700 you can get a laptop better than that $500 laptop....ad infinitum. Stick Out Tongue
