- local dimming on both models
- excellent brightness in bright rooms (i have a very bright family room)
- $200 difference between these two
I'm leaning towards this Samsung QN85DA primarily for:
- MUCH better viewing angles (since this is an ADS panel similar to IPS)
- microLED technology
- better anti-reflection/glare control
I buy Sony TVs almost all the time, but I do think Samsung TVs work better in heavily day-lit rooms. So it really depends on the level of your room's ambient lighting.

... it looks like the Sony X85J/X90J models have noticeably better sound. If you're not getting a soundbar (and I'm not), that might push you towards the Sony.
And someone in SD did mention that the poor viewing angles on the Sony X90J (VA panel) are in fact greatly exaggerated -- and that it's actually not too bad. And the recent Sony VRR software update is a big improvement. If you want to save the extra $200 , and you're a Sony fan who favors their better record on DSE, then I'd go with the X90J.

Thanks for the recs. I have been leaning towards the Sony X90J only downside is the glare. We do have 2 big windows in the family room. One directly across from the tv location.

Hot tip: these are NOT true IPS panels. Noticeable difference between ADS garbage and IPS!
