Free is free and worth checking out for yourself, but as someone who has enjoyed a couple other "walking simulators", I hated this one.

Cool, another game I'll add to my library but never install!

Basically a 2 hour walking story for anyone debating on even playing it. A bit slow but might be worth it if you're into moody/atmospheric/vaguely creepy stuff.

You see, everything has it's limits. Even if the game is not about gameplay, it's quality should be at least on acceptable level. Because each your... hmmm... naive attempt to explore this island will reward you with a dead end full of... nothing. Walk 15 minutes in one direction to reach a dead end with a broken wheel. Then walk 20 minutes in another direction to reach a cave with C2H5OH formula on the wall. Then 30 mins more in another direction to reach another dead end full of... full of garbage. What's behind that mountain? Ah... a candle. Maybe something interesting inside this shed? Hm, I see... a can of white paint... That's your gameplay.

But the main problem, in fact, awaits ahead. And I mean narration. Narration here is just unbearable. It is s-so pretentious, s-so pompous... I even lack words to describe how ridiculous it sounds. I was already fed up with this nonesense right after protagonist's first monologue. It was so unbearable that I instantly tried to drown my character right on the beach... And guess what? - the game actually allowed me to do so. It even rewarded me with an achievement, lol. There are dozens of places where you can commit suicide and eventually you will get 3 achievements for doing so.

Dear Esther was released 10 years ago today, fyi. I say that not with with judgment, but with lowered expectations.

Speaking of DayZ....

If I got a bad spawn I would search for rocks to make a craftable knife to jam into my skull to off myself for a (hopefully) better spawn.

Good times.

Never played it but I acquired the soundtrack in some indie bundle many years back - I have very high praise for this particular track - "I Have Begun My Ascent"

It's a piano + violin duo - more like film music than video game music (though if you're old school some portions with the violin just might remind you of Metroid for the original NES)

I saw that review too, and I decided to install and play it anyway. I think that reviewer did the game an injustice. I should mention that I'm not really into gaming, and one of my favorite past games is Myst. I'm not even sure I would call "Dear Esther" a game. It took me about an hour and a half to finish it, and it was a very interesting experience. I played it with headphones in front of my monitor, but I think playing in front of a large screen TV might be better. It took a while to figure out that I couldn't pick up or touch anything, it was just exploring and trying to figure out where I could go.

Give it a shot. It's different, and interesting, I think.

Can't recommend it high enough - the ambiance, the graphics, the mood, the music. Well worth $20 it used to cost.

Beat me to the punch. I didn't understand the ending until a coworker explained it to me. Don't play this game at work or else you might send the wrong idea.
