How much did you play before giving up on it?
First off, the big draw of this game is supposed to be that "you can play it any way you want" but it's really "you can play it any way you want, as long as its stealth." I'm sure the game's fans will say that's not true, but I've heard a few people also refer to it as a stealth game, so I think it's a fair criticism.
And as a stealth game, it absolutely sucks. I had the misfortune of playing this game, and this game had the misfortune of being played, right after I finished Thief, and going from a seamless stealth game into a very wonky one did NOT give me a good impression of the game. You've got the cattle prod and you've got the dart gun. Both of which are super low on ammo. The dart gun simply doesn't work, with targets running around for five minutes alerting everyone in the vicinity.
I know that's more realistic, but they don't put going to the bathroom in games for a reason, because that wouldn't be fun. And neither is trying to play a stealth game where the dart gun works like that.
Speaking of the limited ammo on both those weapons, this game is miserable to play. Like I can't just stun the people and they go to sleep, I have to think "Oh, I have six stuns I can use, and three bullets, and two darts, how am I going to manage this very limited supply to do this. I guess it's like a survival horror game in that respect except I haven't played survival horror games, so I'm not quite sure what they entail, but the point is that the game gives you a bunch of cool toys and then punishes you for using them. Absolutely every resource in the game is finite and even scarce. Managing scarce resources is not fun for me. I can see why it is fun for other people, but I'm here to play a cool cyberpunk power fantasy, not a managing extremely scarce resources fantasy.
I'm sure the game's fans will say the resources aren't really that scarce, but since they're all so limited to me, and I didn't know when I would need them, I was afraid to use them, and it made the game a lot more stressful than fun.
I think the ethos of "you can play any way you want" tends to just make a game a jack of all trades and master of none, and it was nowhere more true than in this game. I say devs should make really great games that do X, Y, or Z and if the "anything you want" is X, you can play that game, if it's Y, you can play that game, and if it's Z, you can play that game.
One final thing I didn't like about this game was the plot. A ton of people think this game is deep and prophetic or something. I think it's just ridiculous. I think the plot would make great comedy with how over the top all the intricate conspiracy theory crap was, but, but the game, and its fans don't take it as comedy. They take it seriously, and that makes it ridiculous and annoying. You may say "that's cyber-punk." Well, if that's cyber-punk, that's a part of cyber-punk that I think is stupid.
Finally, I found it buggy. I can no longer remember what I'm referring to, but I remember thinking that bugs were frustrating my experience.
In spite of how much I wasn't enjoying the game, I forced myself through the whole thing to the end. There were parts I enjoyed, but they were overwhelmingly tarnished by my frustration with the rest. My top experience by far was, I think, when I broke into that facility and saw them working on an alien. It had this really cool sense that I was discovering some forbidden knowledge and pushing deeper into the conspiracy.
So sorry to those who love the game. I respect your opinions, and I love that you love the game. You've absolutely entitled to think it's an amazing game. These are just my opinions on the game.
