About the Product
  • Right before Earth gets blown out of space to make room for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect. He thought Ford was an out-of-work actor, but it turns out he's a researcher for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. And also an alien. No one could better deliver this dry humor than Stephen Fry, whose narration adds a whole other level to the hilarity

don't do it, it's a scam
This is the audio for only the first book in the classic trilogy, which actually had 4 books, then a short story, a 5th book, then a book that merged ideas from another of the author's series into a quasi-book-6, then an actual 6th book from a different author after the original author's death.

If you buy #1, you're going to wind up having to buy all of them. It's not impossible to avoid this outcome, but it is infinitely improbable.

This may very well be my favorite book of all time. The first time I ever read this book, I was sitting in the jury pool room in the courthouse with hundreds of others. I found the book to be so funny that despite my best efforts, a laugh escaped my lips on at least a couple of occasions.

The version read by Douglas Adams is the best one. I don't know where you'd get it now though. I think it was only released as audio CDs

That's the kind of logic that could power a spaceship!

Still a great read. I was lucky enough to meet DA 30 years ago. Nice guy. I was surprised he didn't have a towel.

The book is an absolute classic but it was originally written as a Radio Drama, ie with a full cast and sound effects. If you'd like to LISTEN to the Hitchhiker's Guide do yourself a favor and get that version instead.

Related info... The 80s BBC TV miniseries is available on Amazon Prime Video and is far better than the movie IMHO. Been ages since I've read the books.

Good deal. I was disappointed to see that the Guide isn't free on Audible Premium Plus, but 99 cents on Chirp is the next best thing.

The Douglas Adams narrated ones were on Audible at one point. I think I got them in 1998 or 1999. It's hard to think that Audible is 25 years old. The audio books are no longer for sale on Audible, but I just checked and my copies work. I don't know when they were removed from sale. These are in the original .aax format compressed to about 70mb for a 5 hours book. They have compression artifacts because they really tried to shrink them. Downloading them via dial-up at the time was a chore.

It's a trap. You listen to this and you're going to have to buy the other four books in the trilogy.

That doesn't make it a scam. You don't HAVE to buy the other books from chirp. You could read them. I've read and loved the series for years but I got this to listen to on walks, because it's just that good.

Agreed. No disrespect to Stephen Fry, but his version is not as good.

What other books do you like? I'll add them to my list. Did you like "A Confederacy of Dunces"?

I've never read Confederacy of Dunces. I'm going to check it out. As for other books that I like, I highly recommend Good Omens, by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. I recommend reading the book before watching the series. That's what I did and I'm glad I did it in that order. As for other books, my tastes range widely. I loved The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings series. I've read way too many books of Piers Anthony, as I'm a punster at heart. I also read serious books. Ive read many books by Tom Clancy (The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, etc.) and Jack Higgins (The Eagle Has Landed, Storm Warning, etc.)
If you're a Steve Martin fan, check out an old book of his with really amusing short stories. It's called Cruel Shoes.

IMO, if you like Douglas Adams then most of Terry Pratchett's works will be okay for you.
