All of the medium grain California-bred rices are very good for sushi. They tend to be the preferred types of rice eaten in Asian households in general. The other favorite brand is Kokuho Rose (which many Costcos stock).

Yes, its not "authentic" short-grain Japanese rice, but I am not paying 2x for Koshihikari

Not a bad deal at all. Thanks OP.

Buy big wide mouth mason jars and fill them up with it. Or can use the storage containers that Costco sells. Better to have in container as open bag makes it very easy for bugs to get in and lay eggs in the rice. Hope this was helpful!!

I know this isn't marketed specifically as sushi rice…but it's the best kind for a vinegary base to poke bowls! Love Nishiki!

Do you guys generally just grab rice from the bag or transfer some to a container and use that? I've been lifting the whole bag from the pantry every time I cook for the past year and am wondering if there's a better methodology out there lol

Because they are typically imported. The Gold Star brand is about $18 for 20 lbs at Walmart. They also have Colusa Rose Calrose medium grain rice (sushi) for $4.12 for 5lbs, which is less than $1 a lb.

Air tight container. I've learned the hard way after throwing 15lbs of rice away due to pantry weevils. I could have freeze the rice and used it, but didn't want to risk it with kids.

Grown just north of Sacramento in rice country. CA ranks #2 in rice production after Arkansas. One of my favorite websites: https://calrice.org/
