I can't say much for these current disks but over my 25 year IT career, all disk failures I have dealt with via SANs, Desktops, and Laptops; Seagate drives probably account for 90% of all failures.

Would slower RPM drives (e.g. 5400) work as well in a NAS device?
Slower can equate to lower heat which can be a good thing in an enclosure. Also, they can possibly be quieter as well which is good if your NAS is in close proximity.
Downvotes are probably due to the 5400RPM. That's the reason it's even this price in the first place. 5400RPM is totally fine for a NAS as long as you do the math and the resulting disk speed is sufficient for you. Personally, I've been on the lookout for a 7200RPM drive at this price so I can make an array of 4 of them while still getting the best performance I can. If you do the math and the resulting R/W speed of the 5400RPM drives works for you, then this is a pretty decent price.
CMR only matters if you're doing ZFS fyi (which I am).
Arg.. I almost pulled the trigger to use up staples rewards on 4TB BarraCuda SATA 6Gb/s 256MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive (ST4000DMA04) for $70, but looking at this I have to pause. Then again in the big scheme of things, 4tb is rather small, and if I were looking to upgade a NAS, I probably would opt for a 12tb or 16tb just to future proof it. I was looking for a backup drive in my case and I have staples rewards that I need to use and would have loved to PM staples on this drive if they had thit drive.. darnit..

For what it's worth, Newegg does pack hard drives in form fit bubble cushions, and from working at an Amazon DS repack station I can say they don't always pack it well.

Agreed. 20 years in IT as well and Seagate has had the most drive failures and it's not close.
