These are old cameras. They take fine photos. I have printed images from an Olympus E-M10 mark ii from years ago that look great. Would I buy one of these cameras on 2022? Absolutely not. Technology has far surpassed these models. Should someone else to learn with or to take simple images, sure. If you have no experience with newer technology, you won't know what you are missing I suppose:
It's funny how every new model of camera somehow seems to make the last model totally obsolete despite no loss of performance. Sure, newer technology is usually preferable over older (however, ask farmers what they think of new vs old John Deere equipment right now) but it's not like the old stuff loses capability over time. Plenty of professional photographers moved to the Nikon D1 when it came out over 20 years ago and somehow made a living off 2.7 megapixels, 5 autofocus zones and a max 1600 iso. Sure, better options weren't available at the time but that still didn't stop them from taking amazing photos.
What recommendations do you have for a similarly capable, newer camera in the $300 price range? Recommending a $1k iPhone 13 pro max as the best photo/video camera under $1k doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Similarly, glad you pointed out the Sony Alpha's. I think at the end of the day that is where I'm going to need to move for the needs I have. Just trying to hold out on plopping $2-2500 on the next rig!
An X-S10 will give you the same PASM functionality, and Sigma just started making X Mount lenses starting with the Sigma Trio released yesterday and the 18-50 is coming at the end of the year. Tamron might also make it's 17-70 for Fuji.
If you want to jump further, you could do A7C with primes (the 40mm f/2.5 is around 20mm f/1.25 on m4/3) for indoor and zooms with m4/3 outside, two systems, but gets you the balance, as zooms on FF is where things get big, unless you use the kit a7C zoom which is okay.
When considering a prosumer or hobbyist, I don't think this same notion applies because we often are not after utility, but the experience of creativity.
Unless you are into telephotography, the difference isn't that great. I went from an Olympus OMD EM1ii to a Sony A7C and the FF camera is smaller and lighter, and there are plenty of super light 3rd party f2.8 and fairly light f1.8 primes. The kit 28-60 zoom is also tiny and excellent. All of that is very portable.
Of course you won't find a comparable lens as small/light as the Oly 40-150 kit lens. So there you're right. For compact kits for wildlife, as well as macro photography, MFT has its advantages. Other photography, not that much nowadays.
I have an E-m10 mk 1 that I love. Usually with the 12-40 f2.8 Pro lens. I'd like to upgrade it--it still takes great photos given the quality of the glass, but it is behind the times with regards to tech features (and the video is crap).
Sure, I don't actually carry it that often given how good phone cameras are...but m4/3 is a great platform and these are absolutely "real" cameras. These outlet prices are fantastic.

I'm full time remote now, and it would be sweet to use some of my nice m4/3 glass for Zoom/Teams calls. Doesn't have to be a recent camera--even pretty old bodies blow the socks off my logitech webcam (and I don't need 4k (or even 1080p) resolution given what Zoom actually sends.

You are right though, it's all about finding out what works for what you want to do and if you actually shoot anything that needs more than a cell phone. Cell phones for example do really well for most video applications, so unless you're trying to get better audio with a mic and do extra things, the video will be great.
Now, for example, you can't find anything in another format that is as small and light with internal zooming and gives you the performance of the Panasonic 35-100 f/2.8, it's just going to be much bigger and FF isn't making a 70-300 f/5.6, neither is there an APSC 50-135 ~f/4. Cell phones can't give you what that lens can outdoors, and even indoors for events.
There's no prime lens in other formats that gives you a super sharp 150mm f/3.5 eq like the 75mm f/1.8 at that size which is useful for indoor sports where lighting gets poor and unless you are luging a large zoom, you performance with cheaper APSC or FF will be inferior. If that is a lens that is could be useful for you, then your phone can't replicate any of that, and m43 will do it cheaper, lighter and easier than others. The Sigma 56mm 1.4 on m4/3 also gives you a good 112mm eq, and again, if you're at a graduation, or recital, or basketball game, etc, these kinds of events trying to get good stills with your phone, it's going to be tough compared to those options.

Obviously Olympus wants to sell *new* cameras, but it would be great if I could buy a compact older PEN body for permanent webcam duty. Its not like I need most features. Lighting will always be good and autofocus needs are pretty basic...
edit: and ditto on the panasonic side (especially since I don't need IBIS for a webcam). Let me use a tiny old GM1 or something, not just the big pro bodies.
edit2: and supposedly the Z cam E1 could be had cheap before COVID...they can make a great webcam with a capture card...but now they aren't cheap anymore.
