Decent deal, have a ton of older L series at work holding up well. Build quality not as good as T but same reliability, infinitely better than E series/other consumer grade thinkpads

Agreed. Apart from that, L series offers some of the premium features like Intel vPro and Ryzen Pro Processors, optional mobile network support, some configurable ports etc. Also, they're currently mist upgradable ThinkPad lineup, apart from the workstation laptops.
Any concerns with the 14" 1080p 250 nits IPS Display?
250 nits seems a little dim compared to 300/400.
Yes, the display is not of great quality and this whole series does not have any higher quality panel option because it is not really targeted for any photo or video editing work. As per the Notebookcheck.net review, the max brightness is around 280 nits and due to its Matte surface, it is usable in outdoor un less you're in very bright sunlight.
please correct me if I'm wrong. The MBA was available in Costco at $849 earlier this week. The M1 with 8GB RAM will do better than this 5850/16GB RAM isn't it?

Not in everything and a lot of people need Windows Eco system, security features of a Pro series Processors, more than 8GB ram and couple of different type of ports for their workloads. Compairing M1 MacBook with every windows laptop post without understanding the actual needs or usecases, is really not that smart of a comparison.
