These don't work if you are using built-in apps on your TV right?

Correct. Source needs to go through the sync box.

Not correct in some cases. If you use the Hue Essentials app on an Android TV, it does a pretty good job. Some apps will not sync the video due to security rules (not allowing the hue Essentials apps to see the screen, probably for DRM), but some apps will. You can try it on the free version of the app.

My wife hates it. Kids and I love it. Dance party. Two drink minimum.

I bought the Govee Immersion kit on sale for $50, around Christmas (normally $80), because there was just no way I was going to spend so much money on something like this. I love the Govee kit. You just need to buy a cell phone camera filter to place over the Govee camera if you want it to be a little more accurate, because it picks up a lot of the blue light that LED TVs emit. OLED emits a fraction of blue light, so you're probably good if you're rocking an OLED.

Even if you don't get a filter, it's still plenty accurate. The Govee lighting will just be blue when there's a lot of black on the screen. The advantage Govee really has over this is that it works on absolutely everything you're watching, because it uses a camera instead of a sync box. You have to have devices plugged into this for them to work.

I thought the camera above my TV would annoy me to death, but I always forget it's even there. You can also place it on the bottom of the tv, and hide it behind a soundbar. It doesn't actually have to be attached to the TV. It just needs a full view of the screen and you calibrate it with the app. Some guy on YouTube put a small dish below his TV and filled it with decorative smooth rocks surrounding the camera, so it looked even less noticeable.

This is technically "better," but if you still want really good sync lighting without having to spend a ton of money, I would go with the Govee Immersion. There's no noticeable lag with the Govee, either. It tracks really well, and it's super cool seeing things like red/orange/yellow color blasting up from behind your TV and circling around it when an explosion happens on screen. I cannot say enough good things about it.
