With it being 85w version would this compare even to a 3050 desktop
I had an 85w 3070 asus tuf 15 that I returned early last year... the gpu score in timespy was around 8,200 overclocked pretty similar to a 2060 non super desktop card. I swapped it for a 140w 3070 66gp leopard and that gpu score is11,300 with a mild oc and also have a full watt 3060 now that does 9,300ish all three machines had mild gpu oc.
Pardon the ignorance here but, if I'm understanding the posts correctly, they have a lower wattage 3070 and higher wattage 3070 for laptops? How is that kosher? Why not just label it closest to the spec it matches? I guess the bigger question is if you can get 3+ versions of the 3070 that are wildly different, what exactly makes ia 3070 a 3070? Same chip but different power inputs/tolerances? (e.g. a degraded chip off the line goes into a 85w model vs higher wattage model/card because it can handle the lower wattage but not the higher?) This seems crazy and highly misleading to me.

Yep, like most marketing, it's highly misleading. Some people like bragging rights: "Mine has a 3070", so it works and it continues. In some cases though a 3070 at a low wattage might be an advantage over, say a 3060, because it has more VRAM, and that's what makes it a 3070. The take away is always do your research.

Good info. They should have just differentiated as such like they did with the 1060s which, if memory serves came in a 3gb and 6gb flavor. But this is just flat out false advertising imo. The average parent on the lookout for a "3070" for their kid isn't gonna know the difference.

Seems like it doesn't come with Thunderbolt, just 1x Type-C USB3.2 Gen1.
