"Safe" is a relative term. No metal knife that's ever existed should go through a dishwasher if you care about it. If you don't care about it, then go for it.

Any knife that advertises being "dishwasher safe" is admitting that it's a cheap POS and that no one should care about keeping it sharp (and there's nothing wrong with that! Just know what to expect!)
It's just wood ain't it? Equivalent to a cutting board
I worked for Macys for 3 years in their house wares department these are the "I'm going to buy them because I literally can't afford anything else and know absolutely nothing about knives set" honestly save the money and buy your knife set one knife at a time. That or buy these for someone to let them know how little you care about them believe me they will get the hint with these.

I got surprised with a basic Zwilling J.A. Henckels Pro set for Christmas years ago thanks to a good sale. Definitely wouldn't recommend anything less.

"Belgique" is owned by Macy's. These are store-brand knives.

Most people aren't that careful about how the insert/remove the knife into the block. Running the edge down the block every time wears it. I understand the logic. Most people at home aren't that great with a knife that keeping one razor sharp really matters. My personal caviot with modern blocks is the "built in self-sharpener" every use takes metal off the knife. All it does is wear out the knife so you have to buy a new one sooner.

I was really considering buying this but then I realized my brother would still destroy it. I'm just going to stick with the cheap knife I sharpened with the AccuSharp sharpening tool. Sometimes you can't have nice things because you live with an idiot.

Yea I don't know about that..

We're talking about BARELY any pressure here when sliding the knife in and out of the block lol.

Not saying that it doesn't dull it.. But the amount it gets dull, is so miniscule. It's literally just 2 extra slices that one would do anyways when cutting practically anything 🤣.

Lol oh well, guess I'm just not a knife block connoisseur.

But as for those self sharpening knife blocks, yea sounds a bit alarming.

If you are on the budge but want some nice forged knives, I would highly recommend 2 Tramontina forged knife sets. Both sets are made from the same German steel at HRC 56 in Brazil but different on their handles, Their quality is similar to Mercer Genesis or Renaissance line. They are not on sale right now, but you can set Amazon price alert through camel site.

The 6pc set is Tramontina Century line: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...0DER&psc=1 It went on sale often. In the last 3 months, the price went down to $29-$34 range 3 times. Another 5pc set is also a Tramontina Century line: https://www.amazon.com/Tramontina...B096NC9CK1 but I don't recall the price ever dropped below $50.

The 3pc set is Tramontina ProChef line: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...0DER&psc=1 It does not go on sale as often but it did go down to $19-$22 range at least once in the last 3 months.

Also Amazon's automated price adjustment algorithm seems to be set at a very sensitive level on them. Once the sales volume at low price exceeds the threshold, the price would be more than doubled. Do your research and decide if they are right for you in advance. Once the price comes down, don't hesitate.

Depends on the block. Many have the slots shaped so they don't fit the other way. That is more common for sets like these.

This and any block is not advised for knives as they dull the blades. Get a magnetic strip for your knives.
Better idea, buy a set with sharpeners built into each slot of the block. Honing steel is ok, technique matters and it's not for everyone.

Some, like this one, hold the knife on the blade edge so it dulls more every time you put it in or out of the block. The ones that hold the knives sideways are probably fine if you are relatively careful.
Insert the knife into the block with the blade upside down if you're so worried about it. I mean a twist of the wrist when inserting and extracting the knife isn't going to EEK! your hand.

So you are saying that I should never wash my forks and spoons in the dishwasher because they are metal? That is a guilty pleasure that I have enjoyed for decades.

No, I'm saying you should never wash knives in the dishwasher. Though to be clearer, it would be "sharp knives". The heat in the dishwasher destroys the edges of blades when with just a single time through
