What exactly is this? I used to collect them as a kid back in '99 and still have the OG holos. Is this a reprint of those older cards? My first deck I ever purchased at age 9 or 10 contained a Blastoise. I'll never forget that lol.

This is for people who want to play the game. The decks are exclusive so they aren't really as collectible as the "regular" cards.

This sold out everywhere originally at retail lol. Many people took a heavy hit on this one.

You are right and you are wrong.

Yes, these 3 decks were constructed and were meant to be played against each other. The cards are not legal for tournament play. However, each card was made in a special foil which makes them extremely collectable. I think most people bought them for the collectable factor over playable factor. $400 (or closer to $200 now) is not worth it for a simple nostalgia trip. This is a highly premium collectable item even at this discounted cost.

At this point just wait for Black Friday, it'll likely be $200 at a lot of places.

Not a reprint of older cards, but it's meant for people who want to play the game and start with the 3 given decks.

Yep, lgs stores got them from vendors for about 175 if I remember correctly and the product already had a bad reputation for high price & poorer quality compare to the Japanese version. It was only 399 at retail stores and most preorders were cancelled at my local retail shops. Ymmv but there's plenty of local game stores where I live so most people bought from those instead of best buy/GameStop.

Yep, Pokemon Co jumped the shark and was printing out the azz to make as much as they could while their products and other TCGs were hitting peak hype/hysteria from collector's. Collectors kind of shunned this product because there was a belief it wouldn't be limited release nor in demand. The $400 price mark was also seen as a gross MSRP for what the product was - it's doubtful there are that many Pokemon fanatics that would be high income and want to play a $400 version of the game... it's a kids game.

"It's a trap!"

Saw plenty of people scalping it at $325 lol. If quality of products was decent enough, grading the top 3 would have gotten you the product for close to free. At $200, it's not a bad collector's item - should have MSRP'd at $160-175.
