Firefighter here. Central station monitoring is a good thing. We'd rather answer the occasional accidental activation than face a fully engulfed home with spreading because no one called us.

Obviously, if we visit your home twice a week because of this, we'll want to have a conversation - otherwise, my statement stands

!!!! WARNING !!!!
I have 7 of these and they are VERY prone to misfiring, usually at the late hours of the night/early morning. I've replaced 4 in the past only to find out that a can of compressed air usually solves the misfiring. If you read the reviews there is a consistent pattern of this.

I run these in HomeKit via Homebridge. In hindsight, I would avoid these and go with a standard smoke detector from Costco.

I have 8 of these, installed 4 years ago. Had 4 or 5 misfires. Batteries have to be replaced once per year as they don't last too long in these and they do not talk to each other (no interconnect). And they're just fugly. If I was to do it again, I'd go with regular wired alarms and added a smart sound detector.

So I just got off with First Alert/BRK. The guy didn't know much, but here's what I think I found out.

They didn't update the model number, and there really isn't any mention of the 1st gen on their web site. All instructions are for 2nd Gen, though they mostly avoid any Gen references.

Check the dates of any info. Anything after about October 2019 is 2nd Gen.

I think the only difference is in the Z-Wave chipset. The Smoke and CO sensors are the same.

These documents had the only references I could find.

From the second page:

Note:
The 2nd Generation ZCOMBO has a year of manufacture of 2020 or later and has a QR code printed on the back of the alarm. If your alarm does not have a QR code, skip to the next section for 1st Gen ZCOMBO pairing steps.

Here's the 1st Gen manual: https://data2.manualslib.com/pdf6...ake=binary

I think the 2nd Gen will be a much better Z-Wave experience. I'll be buying these in a couple of years when my 1st Gen reach EOL.
Yes, had 5 of the 1st gen and swapped them for 2nd a couple months ago. Much, much better zwave features.

It's not a good idea to buy old ones. These detectors won't work after 7 years. They probably stopped making first gen since 3 years ago. That means they can work for up to another 4 years only. And you still have to upgrade your base anyway.
Exactly. I do plan to upgrade everything in 2 years. I just need more coverage until then.

I'm pretty sure I gave a bunch of first Gen. I'll try to find ways to tell the difference and let you know.

I've had two of these for probably 4 or 5 years. Had probably 3 false alarms (and literally nothing going on, no shower, dust, etc). Not a big deal. They work good. Battery life could be better. Probably a year or less.

Have 3 of these for home and 3 for another location. They work great and have the added comfort of being connected to Ring and monitoring. Never had a false alert, I had the fire dept show up because it had went off due to a hamburger smoking on the stove but I had failed to pickup ring the first time they had called (lesson learned).

I can never find a deal on hardwired detectors. Always battery ones.

Have these paired with Ring. Never had an issue with misfires or such; I test weekly to make sure the thing works lol Only notification I ever got from it was low battery. It lasted about a year, year & a half.

I have installed over 15 of these in various houses of friends and family members with RING system over 3 years. ZERO issues. You can use RING app to check the battery status - is a plus.

Thanks for checking! If you find any, please PM me. The 1st gen ZCOMBO does not have a QR code on the back, you can find the following note on the first alert website for Ring pairing instructions:

"The 2nd Generation ZCOMBO has a year of manufacture of 2020 or later and has a QR code printed on the back of the alarm. If your alarm does not have a QR code, skip to the next section for 1st Gen ZCOMBO pairing steps. "

First Alert recommend using Vacuum cleaner to clean it every month. It seems a funny requirement. 6-12 months is acceptable.

Something to consider when getting a combined Smoke/CO alarm:
*Smoke rises--it will fill the room from the ceiling down, so you should position a smoke detector near the ceiling.
*Carbon Monoxide (CO) sinks--it will fill the room from the floor up, so you should position a CO detector near the floor.
Putting those two together, there is no way to position a combined alarm so that it is optimized for early warning in both cases. And the whole point of these alarms is to get as early a warning as possible. I suppose you could position one near the ceiling and another one near the floor, but it would probably be cheaper to get a smoke alarm to put near the ceiling and a CO alarm to put near the floor.

If anyone has one or two ZCOMBO first gen zwave devices (NOT the newer 2nd gen zwave plus) that they would like to sell to me, please PM me. I have an old 1st gen Abode system that only works with the old ZCOMBO. I don't want to upgrade my system yet with so many devices already installed.

If you have a hub that works with zwave plus, i'll pay you to get this new set, and you can give me your old ones Smilie
I have one. Not sure if that helps you.

Would it depend on how sensitive the CO detector is? Even though CO is heavier, some of it still diffuses up to the top of the room.

Similarly, even though most of the smoke rises up to the ceiling, some of it spreads to the floor, just less concentrated.
