Firefighter here. Central station monitoring is a good thing. We'd rather answer the occasional accidental activation than face a fully engulfed home with spreading because no one called us.

Obviously, if we visit your home twice a week because of this, we'll want to have a conversation - otherwise, my statement stands

!!!! WARNING !!!!
I have 7 of these and they are VERY prone to misfiring, usually at the late hours of the night/early morning. I've replaced 4 in the past only to find out that a can of compressed air usually solves the misfiring. If you read the reviews there is a consistent pattern of this.

I run these in HomeKit via Homebridge. In hindsight, I would avoid these and go with a standard smoke detector from Costco.

I have 8 of these, installed 4 years ago. Had 4 or 5 misfires. Batteries have to be replaced once per year as they don't last too long in these and they do not talk to each other (no interconnect). And they're just fugly. If I was to do it again, I'd go with regular wired alarms and added a smart sound detector.

I do not have ring, smart things or any other central smart home kit.

Can these work stand alone to send alerts to my phone/email?

Is there any other home automation that is designed to listen for dumb smoke alarms? I do not have a central hub smart system though.

Thanks for checking! If you find any, please PM me. The 1st gen ZCOMBO does not have a QR code on the back, you can find the following note on the first alert website for Ring pairing instructions:

"The 2nd Generation ZCOMBO has a year of manufacture of 2020 or later and has a QR code printed on the back of the alarm. If your alarm does not have a QR code, skip to the next section for 1st Gen ZCOMBO pairing steps. "

I've not had this experience.

Without SmartThings or ring mobile alerts are not available. But wyze cam listens to the alarm and sends alert to your phone

Thanks op! I got 3. Adding on top of existing wired ones came up with the house. I am on Waze professional monitoring got it the $30 home depot 6 month deal. Now will be sticking it due to cheaper leak sensors. Wyze is adding remote monitoring support for water leaks as well.
Too bad Wyze doesn't support z wave. I still went ahead as price is great and at some point I will have to change the monitoring service.

Can confirm wyze listens for your alarms and sends a notification to your phone. Also handy if your 0 to 2 year old is screaming their head off at a similar pitch and volume to C0 alarm and you need to be notified.

First Alert recommend using Vacuum cleaner to clean it every month. It seems a funny requirement. 6-12 months is acceptable.
Who the heck is going to vacuum things all the way up on a ceiling Lol

Something to consider when getting a combined Smoke/CO alarm:
*Smoke rises--it will fill the room from the ceiling down, so you should position a smoke detector near the ceiling.
*Carbon Monoxide (CO) sinks--it will fill the room from the floor up, so you should position a CO detector near the floor.
Putting those two together, there is no way to position a combined alarm so that it is optimized for early warning in both cases. And the whole point of these alarms is to get as early a warning as possible. I suppose you could position one near the ceiling and another one near the floor, but it would probably be cheaper to get a smoke alarm to put near the ceiling and a CO alarm to put near the floor.
I absolutely second this. This is why I bought a separate CO detector and mounted it near floor level. It's all about early detection. This CO detection device wouldn't be as effective as the near floor mounted ones.

CO doesn't sink or rise. It mixes very well with the surrounding air.

Be aware these don't link together to alert all of them at once. They didn't pass code in my local area because of that. Had to return them all to Costco after a conversation with the vendor.

Upvoting this comment, CO is slightly less dense than air. Proper placement is more at eye level.

As for the these detectors, I have the 1st gen and never had a nuisance alarm. Also most CO detectors, including these, are not sensitive enough and only sound the alarm at CO levels 70 ppm or higher for an extended period of time. If you really care about CO detection, buy a Low-Level Carbon Monoxide Monitor and place near the water heater and/or furnace but more than 15 feet away. Those aren't cheap, however. Expect to pay $100-200.

I'm glad you said this. I was reading that original comment and was just shaking my head. There's incorrect information, and there's potentially deadly incorrect information. That original comment should be edited/deleted.

Would it depend on how sensitive the CO detector is? Even though CO is heavier, some of it still diffuses up to the top of the room.

Similarly, even though most of the smoke rises up to the ceiling, some of it spreads to the floor, just less concentrated.
Bingo, if there is CO in your home its coming from something hot (furnace, water heater, gas fired dryer, gas-logs fireplace). My approach is to make sure the detector near those appliances is combination smoke/co which will mean as the hot exhaust rises it will trigger the CO alert, and then also make sure one of these is where youre sleeping because if your HVAC is pushing it through your home and it reaches your bedroom it will trigger because the air is being pushed and mixed.

TL;DR: one of these ceiling mounted on each level (preferrably inside bedroom and near mechanical room) is plenty of coverage.
