X133557 + Free Upgrade code works for late March in CA. But does AWD require a company ID and any insurance complication?

Watch out for the miles allowed. The coupon only gave me 375 miles instead of unlimited.

Whatever you do, avoid Hertz ....
Maybe it is location/region specific, but I had great experiences with Hertz in Southern CA, LA airport. I know there is some story about people being sued over "car theft", I don't know about that. It sounds too crazy. It might be one of those things where it is overblown or we are not getting the full picture.

We have a trip planned to San Jose California in June. Anyone recommend a company in the area? Hertz and Fox are both the cheapest for a mini van rental but reading reviews is a bit scary.

Slickdeals should not allow stuff like this.

The thing about fox is that they tend to be cheaper because they tend to keep their cars past the manufacturer warranty. That's not to say their cars are not road worthy. When I took a trip in California before the pandemic, they put me in a jeep renegade with 50k miles. 50k miles is nothing in a modern car but make sure you thoroughly check the car inside and out before leaving the lot.

Ever since I started renting on Turo I don't even bother with rental companies anymore. There are so many unique & cool cars that you can rent out from people on Turo.

Be careful with Avis and other car rental places of late.

Make sure to have a copy of your car insurance and what it covers (including amounts) and print off what your CC will cover as well. Have phone numbers ready for them to call. Many will say its required and try to not take your paperwork.
Its a old thing they do but more and more do it now.

That and read reviews for the place you are picking up. Each one does things different and some are more pushy than others.
Doesn't their website below say you don't need insurance to rent a car https://www.avis.com/en/help/usa-...-insurance

Avis provides liability coverage for all our vehicles as required by local laws. However, in some states, the coverage provided by Avis is only applied after the renter's personal insurance has been used to cover all that it can.
So why would they need to check your insurance? I think the problem really is just that car rental industry is so poorly regulated. There are stringent regulations for banks, for airlines, etc. but who regulates car rental companies? No one but your state's consumer complaint dept.

I'm always just confused as to what this actually means for people who don't own a car (e.g., Manhattan people). Your credit card with collision covers you for your own car, and car rental companies are suppose to cover you up to the state minimum liability (which is what they are trying to slyly say but not say on that website). But if something actuall does happens, then what.

Thanks for that. It's been a while since we rented a car and Fox used to have some pretty terrible reviews but now they seem to have brought that reputation up a little but they are still at/near the bottom.

Be careful with this. I've placed 2 reservations now and the price jumped $400 from the price that was on the screen prior to me clicking confirm and the price when the reservation was saved. Also be careful with the "Use your credit card to pay now and secure your vehicle" -- it pretty much converts it to a prepaid and then if you try to cancel it'll charge you $50.

These rental car deals always get red flagged once they get posted to SD. Avis will see a bunch of bookings for a code that is seldom used and advise branches to check for authorization to use the code.

This deal is only for employees of BAYPHARM CORP. If you do not work for them you will get shutdown at the counter.

Many rental agencies are either franchise or pay is based on "sales" of addons. So what their site says and what you're told/allowed at the pickup sometimes do not match.

That and if they are low on cars they will just cancel or drag it out while you get mad and wait for hours.
Last time I rented I paid more to get a car from a place that had at least average+ reviews.
