Wow! I'd say this is a instabuy if you are looking for a general purpose laptop.

Compare to:
https://slickdeals.net/f/15653485-msi-prestige-14-evo-14-fhd-i7-1195g7-16gb-ddr4-512gb-ssd-intel-iris-xe-win-10h-799

That said -- This is Alder Lake clearing the market.

Any difference we should keep in mind between i7-1195g7 vs i7-1185g7?

Not much.

The performance is similar to the 1195G7. It's only in single core that the 1195G7 comes out on top.

I would say there would be a difference in responsiveness because of the higher, more efficient turbo schemes. We can argue whether we would notice it but I think it would exist.

Seems like good performance for the price, but iffy quality overall (dim screen, bad audio, poor cpu temps, middling battery life, etc). Also 16GB of RAM is good, but it's not upgradeable, which may become a problem depending on how you plan to use the fast CPU in this laptop.

My screen is an average of somewhere less than 150nits at home.

I'm speaking about this particular laptop though, not the chips in general.
In this particular laptop the 1185G7 and 1195G7 perform similarly except for in the single core, in which the latter secures the top place.

1195G7, even though having higher clock speeds, performs the same as 1185G7 under constant load. But yes, the difference in performance is hardly noticeable in daily life.

It has a matte screen with an average brightness of 280nits, that's plenty bright for indoor use but would be bothersome in direct sunlight.

The build quality isn't bad either. There is only slight flex but that's understandable given the low weight of the device. In daily life, it won't be problematic.

The CPU temp aren't worrying in daily life either. The laptop hardly gets hot when doing general productivity. Only when under load does it get noticeably warm.

The rest of the things I agree with, the sound quality and battery life aren't worth writing home about.

Looking to replace an older desktop with a laptop that can serve double-duty, whenever I want to pick-up and go. I get the newer machines are hitting any day (and I want to stay sub-$1000)....

I see the sound/outdoor points, which are valid, but for my use case described, is there any reason why I shouldn't jump on this (vs any other SD active posting)?

Thanks in advance for feedback ...

If you are looking for a desktop replacement, consider a 15" or one of the light 17" models.

Thank you, and sorry, I should've mentioned it'll be docked and connected to a monitor (unless I need to grab and go)

Regardless, don't overestimate the tradeoff between screen size usability and portability. If you're going to move around a lot a but use it lightly, a 14" or 13" is fine. If you're going to travel to a destination and do days worth of work in a WFH context, strongly consider a larger screen.
