Some stuff ive learned about all of the -cides.
Insecticides -
Grubs - Dylox kills on contact. Merit (forgot its ingredient name) prevents them from emerging in the first place. If your lawn looks awesome and then suddenly looks bad out of nowhere, you probably have a grub problem (or a dog pee problem?) Must be applied in early summer.
Flying insect - None last that long with frequent rains. I use permethrin. Usually apply it a day or so before I expect to hang outside. I may try out Demand CS in the future as it is said to last longer.
Herbicides -
(pre-emergents will usually also prevent germination of stuff you actually want to grow (like grass), so make sure that your lawn has all the stuff you want in it first!)
Halts (pendimethalin) - the most popular crabgrass preventer and the stuff they put in Scotts turf builder step 1. It works well but you may need to apply it twice (again in midsummer) as it doesnt seem to hold up more than six weeks>?
2-4D Salt - "weed b gon" - the most common one...post-emergent. Must touch the leaves of the weed. Same stuff in most weed-n-feed as well. My main weapon on random dandelions.
Triclopyr - post-emergent that works better than 2-4D on clover, and also works on woody weeds (oak saplings and some vines, for example).
Mesotrione - "tenacity" - powerful post-emergent for stubborn weeds like crab grass. Also functions as pre-emergent (although it has a very short usage window for that...,maybe a month?). If your lawn sucks in the middle of the summer, this is what you want.
Dithiopyr - popular pre-emergent for crab grass and other broad leaf stuff. Very soluble, so if it rains alot, you may have to apply more (but also easier to apply with a pump sprayer)
Prodiamine - another pre-emergent for crabgrass that lasts longer than dithiopyr, but covers a narrower spectrum of weeds. You really want to make sure this is well mixed before you spray.
Non-chemical stuff -
Water infrequently and deeply for better root penetration
Dont cut lawn too short (except when aerating/dethatching). Tall grass has deeper roots and also is better at crowding out weeds (check out dandelion size in a dense lawn vs thin one)

Local turf stores sell it but it's in a very large jug
Lawn mastery has smaller containers
