I think its pricey also, but comparing it to driving by car is ridiculous. Taking Uber, greyhound bus, flight, etc. makes more sense but still not as nice as train experience
Driving is only cheaper if you overlook a lot of expenses that you're paying as part of car ownership in addition to the gas and tolls (which themselves can be similar if only one or two people are in the car). That doesn't even account for the value of your time, as on a train you can be doing work, sleeping in a bed, reading in a lounge car, being served (free) meals in the dining car etc, as opposed to being stuck behind the wheel. There's a reason truck drivers get paid, after all.

Even with gas at absurd levels it is still cheaper to drive by car. You'd think the advantage and allure of Amtrak would be that it is cheaper than traveling by car.

You don't stop paying for auto insurance or car loan payments for the week you travel via train. The only differential is the wear and tear on the vehicle, which is less than the cost for the needed Ubers/rental car when you reach your destination via train.
You see mostly the same territory traveling via both modes.
Traveling by train means you're extending your travel time while paying a premium price for mediocre to low quality bed and food while saving on driver fatigue. It's for people that love train travel, not for people that compare costs for different forms of travel.

In theory seems like a great idea, taking a romantic train trip, relaxing, enjoying the scenery. In reality, most Amtraks are not like modern European trains. They are grungy and have not been updated since probably 1992 or so. And pray you don't get stuck in a roomette next to one with yapping dogs, meowing cats, or a mobile frat party.
I have heard this as well, but friends recently did Colorado to northern CA and had a lovely time - relaxed looking out large window at beautiful scenery much of the way. Pics made me want to give it a try.

Agreed. I'd love to do this, but flying is cheaper and easier. Not to mention faster...

Maybe after I retire.

Last amtrak train i took had sewage backup & was 10 hrs late. Chicago to glacier national park. But my grandparents had a room to go visit them. Grandpa had had a stroke so seemed to work well.
