This A12 version improvements are thread, Latest Gen remote, airplay 2 with eARC (sync with multi HomePod / mini for stereo, and Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax), and support for higher refresh rate with hdmi 2.1

There's also is a hardware fix for Dolby atmos black crushing

If these are refurb units then clearly some of them do fail so maybe it makes sense to get the extra warranty if it's free from Costco.

True though it could also be returned units being put up on the refurb store. I've bought a few refurbs from apple directly that look brand new (including an m1 mini recently. )

Are you sure you have the 2nd gen (silver remote). Sound like you have the 1st gen black remote -- that is the garbage one. The 2nd gen is widely well received. I have both gens and the 2nd gen remote is intuitive and responsive -- everything the 1st gen was not.
