Your dentist, periodontist, and hygienist will tell you that a waterpik is not a substitute for flossing. Ask them. A waterpik is great to clean the gumline and flush out surface debris between the teeth, but not as great as a thread scraping the surfaces between the teeth.

I've been told the same, but from the data and studies that I have reviewed on PubMed the two seem comparable. Of course keeping in mind that the research done was authored by Waterpik employees.
