These are much brighter than other lightstrips. 1600 lumens! I'm actually using them as overhead lighting in my basement and cost wise it's not that bad compared to typical overhead lighting.

That said, I don't think this deal is great as it's refurb. It was this price brand new previously for quite a while and even dropped to $50 at one point.

I never understood why the Hue stuff was so expensive. It's not like this is really any better than the off-brands.

Hue is definitely better than like a Govee or something like that on average. I'm not sure it always justifies the price (looking at you hue sync box), but in general I've never had my hue stuff desync, or need to be reset, or have trouble controlling it.

Can't say the same for my off brand bulbs.

Hue is leagues better than a majority of other brands out there. Build quality is better. Their color tones are much more accurate. Their ability to achieve actual warm whites. Moe integration with other software and hardware. And all their products just work. They never fail to turn on or off on command and are hassle free

It's way better. Whether it's worth the premium one can debate. There's plenty that's cheaper and "good enough" but you will often cover the cost difference with your time managing things.

So I'm guessing this is overkill if I just want ambient lighting behind my desk?

Sure, but if you want the ambient lighting to set the mood wonderfully, no.

Plus, you can buy some matching color/ambiance lights, add them to your desk lamp, and really have fun.

I see. I am aware of the quality of Philips products, I just have not bought in to the ecosystem. No hub or anything. To start now would be $60 for the lights and then $50 for the hub. It might still be overkill, financially, if I just plan to use one Philips product and that also one for ambient lighting on a desk.

I had my eye on the Govee or Lifx strips as an alternative.

There's a post for 65ft of bluetooth-controlled Govee light strip for under $20. That's probably what you want. Smilie

My post was tongue-in-cheek, btw. It's definitely overkill for your purpose. You can probably get away with a cheapo lightstrip that has a remote where you select which color you want.

Ah, I think I wooshed on your tone lol

I think I'll go the Govee route since it pair with Google Assistant too, as does Lifx. I just have experience with Lifx with their bulbs but no experience with Govee. Looks to be an Amazon-only product.
