I like how it calls out that a neutral is required, when literally every residential wiring has a neutral.

edit: Unless they mean some mystery 4th wire, as indicated in the product pics. Then I have no idea what it is they are calling a neutral.

My SoCal 1960's house doesn't have neutral wiring in the switch box. So👏you're👏wrong👏

What you mean is that you don't have a "ground" wire, not neutral. Older homes in the US have only live and neutral, no ground.

There is no 4th wire, the two line/load are the same line before and after the switch.

I was thinking the same thing about neutral being present in every home but then I realized it may be possible that in some homes (new or old) the neutral is not present at the switch location itself. I only needed one switch but went ahead and got them at this price and for the reviews. Hope they'll fit in place of the current switch.

This is to help those out who can't use the Kasa switches:
I don't own the property I'm in currently.
Management inspects the property to ensure compliance.
They indicate rewiring to install the Kasa switches would require me to pay an electrician and show proof.
As I wired these up before when I owned a home, it doesn't take a professional to do as it's not rocket science or heart surgery.

Since I don't want to break my lease agreement, I use these toggle zigbee light switches with Hubitat: https://smile.amazon.com/Amazon-Z...B08TVZK8D6
They will also work on a rocker switch.
(I wanted to use Switchbot, but the lights switches here are not using a rocker switch.)
ThirdReality and Switchbot respond via Alexa or Google voice assistants.
FWIW, Kasa also incorporates into Hubitat.

If you can wire the Kasa in, my automation experience with it in the past was good.

Older houses commonly had the power go directly to the fixture and then two wires to the switch which were both the same hot wire with the switch breaking it to turn the light on and off. This results in there being no neutral wire in the box where the switch is. Codes have changed to not allow this in most places, but there are millions of homes still wired this way which is why they make it clear that a neutral is required.

So this won't work in my house if I only have two wires going to the switch?

Neutral and ground are different. I am not an electrician but I realized this when I was installing kasa switches in my 1990 home. The neutral was absent but it was easy to pull a neutral from a near by wall socket in my case.

Our 1970s house has a light in the utility room that uses the hot and neutral as the switch wires. The hot goes to the switch on the black and comes back on the white wire. Totally not to code but causes no problems aside from not being able to put a smart switch there. All other switches in the house have a neutral in the switch box.

The white wire is acting as a hot wire in this case. It's called a switch leg and is very common in older houses - nothing against code or illegal about it. Code was changed to include neutral wires in switch boxes in anticipation of smart devices - it was never a safety issue.

The white wire in a switch leg installation is supposed to be marked with black electrical tape to indicate that the white is acting as a conductor in this instance, both in the switch box and in the overhead electrical box - but often they are not.
