They put them on sale pretty regularly for $30 without buying multiples. Dated router but pretty outstanding performance for its age and specs.

You could buy 3 and follow steps to flash AsusMerlin firmware and you have yourself a good performing mesh system especially if you hardwire backhaul for under 100

These are great routers (had three). I had to unlock the bootflash to get them on the ASUS firmware, and off of TMobile firmware (super old).

Two notes:
First, I would NOT run the firmware these ship with, it is nearly a decade old. I expect it would be full of security vulnerabilities.
Second, the mesh system is quite difficult to set up. Once it's setup it works as advertised, but it's stupid difficult to get nodes "paired."

Outside of initial setup, they're great though. I wouldn't recommend these to anyone without the know how to flash the bios. After bios is unlocked, I would wholly recommend. I got mine almost a decade ago for "free" from T-Mobile.

I have these running and they are updated regularly by ASUS (still supported). They are NOT AX, but AC works just fine and nodes work without a hitch. Very happy, but yes you need to know what you are doing.

Yeah, we used them happily for nearly a decade. Only just retired then about a year ago, but still work fine. I had issues with the mesh pairing, but once paired they worked flawlessly. Agreed that most anyone needs is AC.

Yes, sure, but it has not been selling at that price for a while. For this deal, it is less than $30 if someone needs to buy 3 or more.

Easy to hack these right since they've been out for a while? Need something easy to setup vpn for parents out of country so they can watch slingtv

If no, can someone pitch a decent one for that purpose?

Also what for firmware would be best to hack to?

Also which vpn have you had luck with for similar purpose?

Thanks in advance

I wouldnt say it's easy but it is pretty straightforward to hack and flash the ASUS RT-AC68U firmware to it.

Not sure where did you see that price. I did a search on SD, It was $30 four months ago. This is an old router, inventory is getting low as time goes by.

Please check the wiki section of this old deal page for instructions on hacking and flashing this router to RT-AC68U which is a $130 device :

After you flash this router to RT-AC68U , you will continue receiving updates on this device. ASUS RT-AC68U router is still on sale on Amazon as new condition. So it will be supported for many more years to come. If you don't have a lot of devices, then this router is still a good choice
