Even if a Whirlpool/Maytag/Kitchenaid breaks faster, it's going to be EASIER for the repair personnel to get the parts and...repair. Good luck!
(Yes, likely there's a way to get 5+ years of warranty protection via the Costco CC and Allstate plan....BUT it's a fridge - stuff should last a decade, if not longer, like ya grandma's fridge!)
My 22-year-old refrigerator died. I looked at all the brands with a single door, bottom freezer refrigerator. The LG model was my favorite. GE #2, KitchenAid and Whirlpool #3. I read ever review I could find. I called and emailed every customer service support line to ask the same questions. I got thru to talk to a person or got call backs from GE, Whirlpool, KitchenAid within 10 minutes to 45 minutes. Most responsive and helpful KitchenAid. Whirlpool was business like. GE I hung up on because I got a guy who was not helpful. Called back and got someone knowledgeable.
Spent 4 hours one day trying to get thru to LG, 6 hours on day two. The only email response I got from LG was the automatic "we received your inquiry. " Mind you I had a dead frig. I could not wait days or weeks for a response. Also telling, when I announced at work my frig died every person who owned Samsung and LG told me the same thing. Never again. Not one person would buy again.
I ended up with a KitchenAid because it had a better warranty than GE or Whirlpool. All had full coverage in year 1. KitchenAid covers the sealed system, compressor, evaporator etc with parts and labor years 2 thru 5. Years 6-10 it is parts only. Then I put it on my AMEX that gives an extended warranty.
Good luck with your choice. I'd stay away from Samsung and LG until they resolve customer service issues
P.S. My very own sister has an entire suite of LG kitchen appliances. They are now 6-years-old and she has already replaced the dishwasher with Whirlpool. She is my direct experience with LG and tells anyone who will listen Don't Buy LG.

I have no idea which brands are generally more reliable but i would not go by what repairmen say

Nvm. Found other ones that have it will list it in description.

I think the issue is, initially the fridges are fine, but 2, 3, 5 years down the line, oddball parts start to break and by that point, LG/Samsung releases slightly changed models, so of course you aren't seeing negative reviews on a retailers website.

This is where an org like consumer reports can come in and do the research on the number and type of repairs needed per unit sold and if one brand or model is more reliable than another and by how much. But i dont have access to CR
And yes ive seen the disparaging of samsung/lg appliances on SD many times in the past
