I don't know if it would work on other platforms.
No. This is gen3
The purpose is simply to host multiple nvme drives on board that support pcie bifurcation.

P.S. pcie bifurcation is supported on many x570 boards primary x16 slot
I use this in quite a bit of builds, can confirm that it works on other platforms, the bigger issue when not used in HEDT is that not all bios/boards support bifurcation properly.

Without bifurcation you can use the first slot. I was given a few of these from different brands they all need bifurcation option in bios.

There are some that handle bifurcation on the board itself, but they are typically much more expensive (especially compared to this price)

As heavyarms1912 said it'll most likely be your primary PCIe x16 slot that'll support bifurcation. This is the slot that you'll generally use for your graphics card. Not a major issue but that does mean potentially exchanging some performance in order to use multiple SSDs in a single PCIe slot.

Asus maintains a list for boards here: https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1037507/

ASUS FAQ showing which motherboards support the PCIe bifurcation needed to route the x16 lanes on this card to individual x4 lanes to the NVMe drives attached to the card.

I understand this is a PCIe 3.0 x16 card. But what is the other unit in gray color shown in figures 1,2, and 5? TIA
Will it work, as four regular SSD drives in older motherboards without any of the fancy stuff?

Heat sink. Requires chipset, motherboard, and BIOS with PCIe bifurcation support.
