The purpose is simply to host multiple nvme drives on board that support pcie bifurcation.
P.S. pcie bifurcation is supported on many x570 boards primary x16 slot

Without bifurcation you can use the first slot. I was given a few of these from different brands they all need bifurcation option in bios.
There are some that handle bifurcation on the board itself, but they are typically much more expensive (especially compared to this price)
