I bought these and quickly returned. They constantly send data to a chinese address.

After I disconnected all devices from using the network on the mesh, I still saw frequent traffic going out to devacs.edatahome.com

whois devacs.edatahome.com: CHINANET shanghai province network China Telecom No1,jin-rong Street Beijing 100032
Am I missing something? Instead of buying the 3-pack for $60, wouldn't it make sense to just get two 2-packs for $68 and have a spare?

Can you simply add units to the mesh? If you have two 2-packs, can you set up all 4 in a large home?
no you are not missing anything. It is just that your math is better than most store managers in America. LOL

Can I just plug one of these into my good router and use all of them as access points to extend my wifi while my good Asus router does the rest?

Fire stick max, tab s8, s22, etc... if you don't have wifi 6 you might as well use candles to light your house because youre out of date. Let me guess, you still use micro usb? Man I can't associate with you people.
Bro you are so cringe lol

but it is a different story when you have to serve 250-300 users simultaneously on this shitty TCL router. b/w is not the only issue when it comes to multi user experience.
I never said use a TCL router for 250-300 people…. I was simply speaking of internet speeds.

From an objective point of view, there is a reason these are selling this cheap. These use Realtek chipsets, which is bottom of the pile. For consumer devices its: Qualcomm/Broadcom>MediaTek>RealTek. Yes these are WiFi 5, but should be able to handle most household requirements. Wifi 6 AX is beginning to become mainstream, but there are some compatibility issues with some devices like older ESP switches, some older Nest Thermostats, smart home assistants/displays etc, that are wave 2 Wifi 5. If you don't have these devices. good for you, you don't have to upgrade them and factor in the cost of upgrading to WiFi 6. Besides has anyone heard of 2.4 Ghz AX clients (I mean like smart switches etc that only operate on 2.4 Ghz), there seem to be none.

Looks like your link was blocked. Which manufacturer do you think these are?
T_e_n_d_a Nova MW6. More specifically the 2018 revision of the MW6 (v2). The interior and circuit boards on FCC site for the TCL (FCC ID 2ACCJB123) and MW6 (2018) (FCC ID V7TMESH3-18) look mostly identical. RockSpace also sells a version on Amazon too. I glanced at their Google Play Store apps and their screenshots look similar (though they could be copying each other or licensed from a third party).

I've seen T_enda devices carried mainly by Newegg and Micro Center since the early 2010s (urlhasbeenblocked HQ is like a stone throw from Newegg HQ in City of Industry's tech warehouse corridor). Not sure why SD censors the brand. If you search the forum, you'll find that the MW6 mesh 3-pack were popular in 2019 at 3/$100, and the first T_enda deal dates back to 2009.

TCL is one of the largest TV sellers in the world. Doubt they are rebranding someone else's routers.
TCL barely have any networking offerings. They don't even market any networking devices in most of their markets and this mesh kit is not on their China, Canada or UK websites.

Does the primary node need to be always wired to the router or modem? Or can I put the primary node anywhere and connect to the wifi wirelessly?

Is there any way to disable the 5Ghz network on these? I'm guessing not from what I can see in the manual. I want a cheap 2.4Ghz-only mesh system for IoT devices that can't connect to our main 5Ghz-only network.
