Air you have js better , this is looks super dated And the screen isn't laminated , it feels plastic
Base model is $329 so yeah. The extra $100 and change is for more storage which frankly isn't really necessary if you're savvy with cloud storage.
The iPad pros are gorgeous but also like $1000+
Personally I feel like the minis are still the best bang for your buck. Hardware is better then the iPad and using the keyboard isn't awkward.
Yes, get the Air 5 instead. Modern design, usb-c, 8gb of RAM.

You'll be happy with the air but it's $599. Bigger screen too. Look into trading in your current ipad directly to Apple. That's usually what we do when we buy new apple products. Did that when we upgraded from watch 3 to watch 7.

RAM is the limiting factor for mulit-tasking, smooth operation, and most importantly performance after multiple yearly updates
A device with 4GB of RAM (Air 4) will run ALOT worse in 2 years than one with 8GB of RAM (Air 5)
That being said if you are spending $550 for the Air 5 (Education price) you should think hard about the iPad Pro 11 2020 on Apple Refurb site for $610. For a difference of $60 or $110 (if you get the AppleCare+ for each device) you get 4 speakers, 100 nitt brighter screen, and the 120hz refresh rate but you do only get 6GB of RAM and no M1 processor.
I love the Air 5 I have for what i need it for PDF annotation and some light media consumption. I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max and despite using that more than I do the Air 5 I still barely notice the 60hz display on the Air 5 and this is with fast scrolling of PDFs/websites

Consider a refurb iPad Pro from like 2020?
If she's still on the original and has no complaints, I'd say she will probably be fine with the entry level now. It really has gotten substantially better and the pricing is hard to beat if you can get by with the 64gb. I think I'm headed that way myself and am on my second Air (2019 model, I think)

You are absolutely correct. I mentioned the RAM limitations of past model Airs and got downvoted to hell on other threads. I think people don't consider that although Apple products are optimized pretty well compared to competitors, there is still significant slowdown with lower RAM.
The Pro 2021 which is M1 and costs $750 ($200 more than the AIr 5) has 8GB of RAM.
For most people 64GB is sufficient and they dont really caare about the ProMotion Display (which leads to fewer hours of battery life when writing with the Apple Pencil 2 since when you use the Pencil the screen is always running at 120hz) that the extra $200 is not worth it.
That's why I suggested the Pro 2020 which has 2GB less RAM but still has the other Pro features for only $60 more.
