Yeah, 12th gen is pretty good, largest jump since Haswell(prbably more like Sandy bridge)? i think
The jump is undoubtedly better than from 9th to 10th gen and 10th to 11th gen, but it may not be as significant as you think for mobile devices. Remember that 12th gen laptops and benchmarks are already available.
From my understanding, based on reading, most of the mobile CPUs will see about a 12% difference on most products. The more significant gains are on high-wattage gaming computers. The problem is that Intel puts low-core count CPUs in the "EVO platform" packages. Anything similar to this laptop, or a Gram, will be using the "skinny" chips.

Thanks for your insights. I'm really looking for computers that can handle moderately intensive tasks (e.g. running a bunch of PWAs in a browser, multiple virtual desktops) with a little power to spare, and have a good thermal profile.
Does anyone know if the 12th-gen chips have made advancements in terms of thermals? My understanding is that AMD is still ahead when it comes to that. I'm looking to buy a moderately powered desktop that is designed decently for its specs, so I'd appreciate any info that people can add.

IMHO, I would look at any of the Ryzen 7 5000 series chips. With eight cores and excellent efficiency, they're an excellent family of CPUs. Plus, they work great for VMs.
The Core i7 10800H is also a good CPU to check out. It's an 8 core mobile Intel chip. It's on par with Ryzen 7 5700. But it's a little more power hungry.
You may want to check out the Dell 16 Plus. It has the Intel CPU above, 16 GB RAM, 512 or 1024 GB drive, and either a GTX 3050 or 3060. It's about 4.3 lbs It has a solid 16 inch screen, good build quality, and can be had for under $900.
I ideally want a lighter laptop, but if I don't find a good deal, I'll pick up the 16 Plus.

This. Laptops are constraint to thermals and TDP.
If anything, the big.small dual cores will be the cream of the crop as they'll mimc what ARM has been doing for the past 5 years.
IE higher sustained turbos for basic task/browsing will be the biggest benefit.
I bought this a few months ago. It's worked great so far. The facial login works really well and changes nicely between users. It's fast and consistent. Would recommend.
Bought this around Black Friday. Fantastic laptop. Great screen. Only downsides are the audio is a bit lackluster and there's limited ports. But great build quality for the price and you can always get an adapter.
got this for about the same price around the holiday sales and it's ok, mainly minor problems that may or may not affect your usage
On paper, the specs look great, but in reality, it doesn't seem to match the specs. Here are things i've noticed from some light usage
-400 nits sounds good but the screen is glossy, so 400 nits actually is not bright enough for applications or media where there's dark screens/images involved. Trying to watch movies in a sunny room, I need to move it around to find a good angle, otherwise i'm staring at a mirror
-speakers are garbage. I don't remember the last time i've had speakers this bad on a laptop. My galaxy tab S7/S8 sound WORLDS better, and it's just a tablet
-there is no dedicated page up/down button. This is a disturbing trend for laptops recently imo. The fact that you need to press 2 buttons, on opposite sides of the keyboards, to do what a single button press supposed to do.. is extremely illogical and annoying. Since I use it to browse webpages, it's probably the most annoying thing about this laptop. it force me to use 2 hands to scroll a web pages or use a mouse
aside from that, the laptop comes with some lenovo software that I don't find particularly useful
overall, decent laptop, but i would not buy it again due to the issues above, especially now that 12th gen intels are out.. might as well wait for a 12th gen deal

Only carbon or Thinkpad series worth at this price point.
