I went in Oct a couple years ago. Beautiful weather, calm waters, and just a majestic place. Easily one of the best trips I've ever taken. Rent an ATV and drive all over!

Excellent time to visit. Weather wise and not so crowded. Best time to visit in my opinion.

September is meltemia season which is basically squalls so the sea won't be as calm although the temps should still be warm.

Meltemi is not squall (bourini) and if you have lived in Aegean you will know that it can be anytime after May (although it usually peaks in July).
So, that's not a reason to pick or not Cyclades in Summer.

Back in the day, Sept-Oct would be the best time to avoid tourist crowds.
Last year it was really good for Santorini in August (and not bad for business there).

Having said that airlines from US are horrible and last year UA was an EPIC MESS to the point that I will never fly with them ever again. Get a EU carrier that will stick to the regulations there and won't have you trapped in airports forever.

Note should be: Good luck staying 15hrs+ in Heathrow for that price

The Santorini airport reminds me of a bus station in third world country during an evacuation. But more crowded and less organized.

Beautiful island though.
