Can Krugman even be considered an economist anymore? Setting aside the failings or merits of his economic theories, he largely ignores economics to focus on his social and political views.

You're right, it is aimed at providing intellectual support for free-market advocates. But it also raises some intriguing arguments that are still applicable today, even though it was written forty years ago. For example, it argues that there is a link between increased government control of the American education system and the concurrent decline in academic performance.

This is a great deal, and thanks/rep to the original poster. But this is a popular book, so if you're not sure you'll like it, I'd first recommend seeing if you can borrow a print or e-version from your library. (Yes, I know I'm suggesting that you bypass the free market. Sue me.)

Can't speak to the book itself, but having heard Milton, he was definitely very smart. I tend to disregard what the diehards say. The original guy/ message is usually more nuanced.

It is a good read to get a perspective on economics. The guys I like though are Stieglitz, Krugman, and Keynes.

I read this about a decade ago. The paperback version is super hard to find and got my hands on a copy. Friedman is lauded by the right. Being a centrist and a capitalist, I found the book to be engaging. If you can, YouTube his PBS series which aired in the 80s, it's very good! I might drop 2 bucks for their version, totally worth it.

I read it in an econ class in college. Back when it was written it was quite a new concept. If you want the free summary, Google "Milton Friedman Donahue show" and watch the two times he was on there.
I liked the book.

I've always been a fan of exposing yourself to different views, including ones you wouldn't agree with. If you read this, I think you'll gain an understanding of one of, if not the biggest, influencers on conservative and Republican thinking and policy making starting from the Regan administration and beyond.

And yes, Milton is a very smart guy.
