Nice deal and I like it (have one already), but it will only be updated for one more year. The newer 2nd Gen 2021 version is $99 right now for 6 more days.

I bought one of these through a previous Slickdeal. I have been trying to use the drop-in feature to video call, but I can not seem to connect unless I am on the same wireless network. I reset the unity, and tried looking it up but couldn't find an answer. Can anyone here help? Thanks in advance.

I used one for months and traded-in later. The OS or the UI is not very intuitive and not much support for others apps. If not for speaker purpose, a fire tab with a stand will be more useful.

Well this is disappointing that these will be just like phones where updates stop after a few years. This wasn't on my radar, and probably not for most people, that updates would stop for these devices this quickly. People don't generally buy one smart device, they buy multiples and someone might buy 10 of them at once. It's going to be painful to need to keep buying new ones in bulk if you have a house full of echo devices.

Looks like Google is also making their devices obsolete too:

Google Nest connected home devices will receive automatic security updates for at least five years from the date we start selling them

My Echo 8 would not boot up (after a software update?) just 1 week past the warranty. Amazon would only offer %20 off the price of a new one so I basically rented an Echo for $100/year!
