Is Popular Science trying to mimic Popular Mechanics for a bit of credibility?
Popular Science started in 1872 as "The Popular Science Monthly."

Popular Mechanics started in 1902, so PopSci came before them but they've both been around a very long time.

I subscribed to PopSci as a kid but haven't been following them in recent years, though I'd imagine they struggle to get revenue these days, like many other magazines, so they resort to stuff like this.

If you must use MS Office, it's a nice deal. I'd probably only buy this on a desktop though, if anywhere... not on a laptop that might be more likely to break. Wonder what ties it to the computer though. SN from the MOBO or something?

For most people though, they could get by using LibreOffice, or whatever the current "good" free one is

Be aware that there are some difference between 2021 and Office365 that you may use at work.

Yes it is tied to the motherboard. If you replace the motherboard and need to reinstall you will have to activate over the phone.

This is the usual price for black/grey market keys. Is this one legit? I doubt so.

You can ask an employee friend to provide an account for you. And there these limited editions are like 20 dollars.
I got office 2019 for my personal laptop for $20. And then that is lifetime till the computer works.

Anyone know of similar deal for Chromebook
You can't install Office on Chromebook. You can use the online version, though.
