Lifetime for THE COMPUTER you install this on. It's non-transferrable. (Updates are apparently included) I'm seeing regular price between $69-99.

The free updates don't include upgrades.
IOW, when Office 2024 (or whatever) comes out you don't get to upgrade to it. However, you will still receive security, bug, and critical updates to your Office 2021 for the life of the product (thru Oct 13, 2026).

Also, read the ONE COMPUTER part as something that you control. If a computer that you had this Office 2021 on dies, you are fully able to license the same Office 2021 on a new computer, provided you log into your Microsoft account and remove the old computer activation. It's a full retail license that is fully transferrable - as long as it's only on one computer at a time.

Also², If you already have (or have had) a Microsoft account tied to a subscription Microsoft product (Office365/Microsoft365) Microsoft may not allow you to use that account for perpetual products (although this isn't explained when you try to use it). Just create a new, free Microsoft account and activate it that way. You can use the key you receive for any valid email address (regardless of the email address you enter when purchasing the Office 2021 Pro).

I purchased from here in mid April. Last week my installation suddenly restricted my access as unlicensed. I called Microsoft support and they tried to help but unable to saying something to the effect this was MSDN licensed and ultimately I would have to contact the seller. I do not recommend this deal.

stolen license codes

these are usually stolen keys generated through a company's corporate license. if a large company prepays for, say, a block of 1500 licenses for their employees, the price per key is really really cheap. so some sleazy IT employees will "issue" 50-100 of those keys to themselves (steal them) and then sell the keys to off-shore resellers like "Topfastkeys" who then sell the stolen keys to you

it's unlikely that the company will ever find out as a few stolen keys is a rounding error for these big fortune 500 companies and they likely won't deactivate your key even is MS finds out... but that's why there's a "warranty" because if/when they do find out, all unactivated keys in the block will get wiped.
Popular Science is a well-known publication though. I don't doubt that these are legit. That said, it's only for the 2021 Office and only a single license, meaning you won't get future updates and it's only going to work on a single PC. I assume if you install it on another PC, it would deactivate the previous.

This is the usual price for black/grey market keys. Is this one legit? I doubt so.
Yeah, this is really bizarre. I wonder if they got tricked by a "reseller" into offering these, because as a mainstream publication MS could easily go after them for this.

popular science is a blog and you are reading a "SPONSORED POST" published "BY STACK COMMERCE" and i would assume popular science is receiving a commission on each sale.

this is nothing more than a full page ad.

Decent deal if you only have 1 computer and no iPad. This is a commonly offered price for the stand-alone Mac Office which has a MSRP around $119 I think. It gives you compatibility updates (until the next full version) but not feature updates like 365. Also no iPad version access or cloud storage.

By comparison 365 single user gives you two installs (can only use one at a time) plus unlimited iPad installs, cloud storage, and frequent feature updates. However, it's about $40 year if you buy a code when they go on sale — Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day are reliable. As to which is the better value depends on the user.

Just buy whatever current version is available and it's good for 10 years. Free "updates" are meaningless for the most part. It's just a word processor at the end of the day.

I mean, Popular Science USED to be a print magazine and was around for a very, very long time. I don't know how the new publisher is though.
